Stock turbo crapping.... what route to take? Need opinions
OK- My stock S4 turbo, bought used, is on it's way out.
Nice bit of oil smoke, and TONS of shaft play, both in and out and side to side.
So... my engine needs a differnet turbo anyways...
what route should I take??
Price is a HUGE consideration.
Is just getting this stock one rebuilt the cheapest option?
I don't really suffer from any boost bleeding- it holds 10 psi to redline, but spoolup could definately be quicker.
what should I do? what's the most cost effective?
My engine and fuel system is built up to handle lots of power...the turbo is definately too small for my setup, but I can't afford anything more than a few hundred bucks in turbo work right now.

That's what I'm thinking... I'm not going to touch the housing or anything, but just wondering if there was anyhting I should do to the compressor/turbine that would be worthwhile since it would be out anyways.
I'm still a little green on modifying turbos... I've heard you can use a wheel from a grand national? Better match for a higher flowing engine? Wonder where I would find one....

My wategate is actually overported... about 10% past the flapper...
I have no idea how much a hybrid would run me thuogh.. price is a huge factor.
I wouldn't mind a wheel that would be more efficient at 11 psi or so than the stocker....resulting in more power because of better flow and less heating.
