Stock security system problems....
Hey, I was wondering if anybody can help me out with this problem. I have an 88 GXL and I can't seem how to get the security system to keep working ( I searched). Sometimes it arms just fine and works all the time, and sometimes I go to lock the car and........... no security system at all. I read some different ways to try and fix this but I haven't gotten it to work. I was outside opening and closing door, hood, and hatch but can't make the damn thing arm. If somebody can help me out, I would appreciate it.

Are you asking to to arm it or how to set it off? To arm it you have to close up everything you can while you're in the car and then depress the lock switch ,on the inside of the door, and get out, close the door and don't touch it again with the key. You should hear a beep when you depress the switch.

If the alarm is not being set it could be because the plungers inside the door frame are stuck. The older rubber accordian boot over the switch could be stuck together.

The only bad thing is that there is no remote control for the stock system.

I'm not sure about an 88 GXL- but I have a 1991 Convertible and this works for me all the time. Make sure the passenger door is closed. Depress driver's side lock from the inside- you should hear a beep. Lift up the door handle while you shut the car door, when it is fully shut, let go of the handle. It should arm within 7 seconds or so, and beep to notify that it is armed. Also, be sure your trunk is shut before you do this, my alarm doesn't arm unless the trunk is closed.

ok... so I know nothing about the system at all mainly becuz I have never driven my 7, I had a blown motor right away and have been working on it and other things since. Anyways, so the security alarm is set by locking door with me in it, and then how do I shut it off when I go to get in it? Will the key do that or is the orange security thing how? I don't know and sorry this is a tarded question I just figured since the thread was up I would ask.

well just a couple times.
well just a couple times.
This could be because the inside driver door lock switch has grown weak over the years due to constant use. When you shut the door, gravity will push the lock down just enough to engage the alarm circuit.
Then the next time you open the door, the alarm goes off.
I prevent mine from doing this when the car is in the garage by making sure both doors are unlocked all the time. Anytime I am out and about, I always lock the car (and arm the alarm) so it is not an issue.

Wow, I didn't even know the hood had an alarm switch.
lol all this sounds so familiar.....oh yeah, MY CAR...Also a '88 GXL.
Stock security system, key light, and rear wiper all work intermittently. I've tried 3 different warning light clusters and none of them have been fully functional (dif. prob. with each one). For some reason my in-dash voltmeter reads like 17v when the car is running and if the AAS engages the meter dives like 2V for a split second. I also have a rough Idle and the AWS seems to work intermittently too. The cruise just worked for the 1st time about two days ago after I replaced the rubber stopper that engages the clutch switch on the clutch pedal (let's hope that continues to work).
I'm guessing I'll be contacting Icemark for a new warning cluster when I figure out if my car has ABS or not, the original cluster was not in the car when I got it so I dunno yet, haven't looked. I may need a new CPU as well...we'll see after I go through some more wiring...etc...etc...
Good luck to ya guys, these old cars can be a money pit if they've been neglected.

My problem is that it is really picky about when it arms. Sometimes it does, sometimes it doesn't. What are some of the connections i should check out?? Hopefully it will just be a loose wire or something.......... thanks to all for the help
