Stock Carpet Re-Installation - Where to Cut?

So after dying my carpet (with less than satisfactory results, but still better than what I had before), it's now time to reinstall it. When I removed it, I just pulled the dash and then kept tugging towards the rear of the car until the carpet slipped out from under the HVAC unit.

Now that I'm trying to reinstall, I'm having trouble getting the carpet to go back under the HVAC. I don't mind cutting the carpet since the cuts will be hidden under the dash, I just want to do it in a manner that makes as few cuts as possible. I just wanted to see if anyone can shed light on how they cut it, or if my plan will work before I go ahead and cut.

The main sticking point that I can see is this, it's some sort of locating pin. Presumably, it engages in this:

My original plan was to just pull the pin out. But since the HVAC makes this a tight squeeze anyways, I thought about cutting as follows:

The red line indicates the cut, the red arrow indicates the direction I'd shove the carpet. I'd be cutting from the locating hole straight forward. This would allow the carpet to slide around the locating pin, and then I could tuck the carpet up under the HVAC from the sides.

Theoretically, this should allow the minimum amount of cutting while still re-installing the carpet. I'm sure others have cut more and had no adverse effects, but I'd still like to minimize the cutting.

Thoughts?

Thanks, Chris

i removed my carpet without taking any of the dash off at all, I just put a slit in it and tucked it in after

I think you might be over thinking this

i removed the pin, and then the thing just slides in there. IIRC the heater box is only held in with two nuts, so you can loosen it and tilt it up, although its not really needed

Thanks for the advice, it was actually easy. Pulled out the peg like j9fd3s said, then the carpet still didn't want to slip under the heater box so I ended up cutting a rectangle out to allow it to slip under.

Went from an arduous struggle to a 5 minute job.

Thanks for the help
