steering wheel removal

Went to Poop Boys the other night to get a steering wheel puller. They sold me a real cheap steering wheel puller($6), which was all they had.
Got it home to figure out that it won't fit (too small).
I went back and got a 3 claw wheel puller. I'm not sure if this will work.
What have you guys used to get that thing off and where did you get it?

You're wasting your money with the pullers...
Just remove the center nut and rock the steering wheel side to side while pulling on it.&nbsp Just be careful when it starts to get loose!&nbsp You'll end up punching yourself out if you're not careful!

loosen the nut almost all the way off, then rock the wheel back and forth. With the nut still on, it wont coming flying at your head.

Got mine off with a puller on loan from AutoZone. Worked like a charm, mostly.

remember before you pull the wheel to mark the bolt and steering wheel hub with a little paint.

It will make lineing up the steering wheel hub to the steering shaft/bolt when you go to put the wheel back on much easier.

Just to be difficult........I've had to use a puller before. The rock and roll didn't work and I ain't no sissy boy either. Had to use one of those three legged pullers and some ingenuity. Once off I've never had to use a puller since. Like I said, just being difficult today.

That made me laugh as I have done it before (wacking myself in the head after pulling off a steering wheel). I may be getting old or the cost of a puller doesn't mean much me but I prefer pullers now.

I think we've all given ourselves a headache or a black eye, if not a bleeding nose by pulling on something way too hard and having it suddenly release on us. My most recent episode would have to be pulling on a breaker bar to have it suddenly release on me and come flying off the nut and whack me in the nose. Hurts like a bitch.

Question

OK. So I found answer to a part of my question in this thread. I guess I don't really need a puller after all. My other question is that the horn pad doesn't want to come off. Is it clipped onto the steering wheel in such way that I would need to pry it to get it off? I have taken off the two screws behind the horn pad, but the pad itself just didn't want to come out at all. I don't want to yank it too hard either in case it breaks.

the horn wire is probably pulling it back... or unless there's another screw you need to take out... there might be more than two screws....

yeah the whole punching yourself in the face thing is no fun, I did it with a 1/2 inch drive ratchet putting race shocks on my CRX. I too have never used a puller on any car, just loosen the nut and the wheel has always come right off for me.
