steering rack question

I have an 86 GXL all stock. Yesterday I noticed that there is a ton of noise coming from the passenger front corner of the car when you push down on it. It sounds like the coil spring is compressing(old suspension is next on my project list to replace) but there is also a rattling going on like something is loose down there. Also, when driving yesterday, I found that the steering does not "center" in the same place--it changed while I was driving, usually after hitting bumps. That is why I started checking it out. I am about to go take the wheel off and check it out, but I wanted to ask in here--my ps rack has been leaking, so I stopped filling the ps fluid and I have been driving it without ps for a couple months now. Can that cause damage to the rack? I am just looking for ideas on where to look. I will update when I get out from under the car. Any ideas would help. TIA

Sounds like a blown shock or busted linkage

yeah Icemark I found it--the bracket that mounts the sway bar to the control arm is busted off at one bolt. I now need a replacement bracket and a bolt/washer/nut to attach it to the control arm. I took the tire off and there was daylight between the two!! Any ideas where I can find these fast and cheap??
