the SW20 is a great car, but know this: During it's early development, Toyota had problems with chassis stiffness in the SW20. Even after numerous fixes, they never really got it quite right untill about '95(or so) which is right before they stopped importing them here into the states. The engine, however, is an engineering marvel, a great platform to work from. Bottom line: If you want a little drag car, the MR2 is a great choice. If you want a good autocross car, the MR2 is still a good choice, but if you are serious about racing, you're not going to be happy with the chassis flaws in the earlier Mark II MR2s. Just my $0.02

i know that before 92' the mr2's had a rear suspension problem. What would happen is when it got compressed far enough, it would suddenly tow out causing loss off control of the car and make you spin out. The mr2 factory race team could beat all the porsches at the time in the strights (944?) but could never keep up with them in the turns cuz the problem was that bad. i read about this in a 92' car and driver.

I got a friend that had a 91', says its a very dangerous car. Their where times he lost control durring hard cornering. If all you do is drag though, you probably wont have many problems.

buit if you get one, get a 92' or later.

It was just his, we can knock the MR2 all we want, but the engine is pretty bullet proof. Not to mention, the aftermarket support is as good if not better than for our cars. The only thing that worries me about him getting one is that it's not really safe, even for just day-to-day driving. These things seriously spin out all the time.

Yea I too know about the suspension tuning problems of the early MR2 MK2's, but after '93 (maybe '92?) it was pretty much cured and it's a great car...there are only 2 other cars that I'd love to drive if I wasn't a child of the 7...the Silvia (S14/MK2), and the MR2 (MK2).
