starting issue, flooding

OK. So, I have been having a cooling issue with my 86 GXL. Long story short, I put a fan clutch on it, go to crank it and it wont start, it will turn over, but wont fire up. It is flooded really bad. Let it sit for a day, and it still wont start, do this a few days, and nothing. So I pulled the plugs, and they were all gassed up. So, I dried them out, turned engine over and it pumped some gas out plug holes. I did this a few times, put it back, and it wont crank. Pulled them again, and it is flooded again. It is like it is putting way too much gas in the engine when it is turning over. What could cause this? Also, where is the fuel pump relay/fuse, so I can try pulling it and cranking it to keep from more gas going in?

THanks for help in advance

Chase

Its on the right hand side, under the dash, next to the steering column... Unplug it and crank, once it fires, plug that bad boy back in.

Oh, and its YELLOW!

You can also unplug the fuel pump connector which is under the rear carpet about 6-12" away from the pump towards the driver.

I've never messed with the relay so I can't comment on that. My rear carpet lifts up in about 4 seconds and I don't have the sheep hide covering anything so it's pretty easy. But............ I have a cut off switch so it's all irrelevant to me.

Well, basically you can deflood your car without ever opening the car door. Great for when its raining, snowing, cold, wild animals attacking you, etc...

You can do it by feel alone, no need to even stick your melon under the dash..

if think it's one of the main fuses under the hood. The one that says egi inj. Try pulling that fuse whenever you take out your plugs to unflood the engine and turn it. Fuel pump relay and resistor are located near airbox. Here's a write up how to do a usefull fuell pump mod. In my old engine the main reason I had problems starting it because it was getting flooded from old leaky injectors + the fact I had a leak on a internal coolant seal made it hard to start as well. Once It did it looked like somebody deployed a smoke screen grenade ; ). Anyway I also have Rtek 1.7 ecu upgrade, which makes it convinient for 7 with flooding problems to unflood them. All u have to do is depress the gas pedal all the way and fuel cuts off.

Only problem with this method is that it kills the spark also. With my method, the ECU will still send spark to the plugs, aiding in the deflood procedure.

If I have a fuel cut off switch and I flooded the engine, would i still need to pull teh EGI fuse and floor it and crank it or will just turning off the fuel switch do the same?

Turning off the switch is the same thing as what J-Rat/I have said. It's actually closer to J-Rat because I think the switches usually tie into the relay.

so kill the fuel, mash the throttle and try cranking it to clear the flooded engine?

I'm not sure if the throttle matters, but basically yes.

i think hitting the throttle opens the throttle body allowing more fresh air in...

I do it, but I'm not sure if I was supposed to. Of course I have to or my car will die... good job me for having my BAC/Thermowax/AWS stuff removed.

Doesn't the S5 have an auto fuel shut off when you mash the throttle while starting?

This might help too: http://www.rotaryresurrection.com/2n...nflooding.html

ok, thanks for the help. I got it cranked by pulling the relay under dash with yellow plug, pulled it cranked on car, when car started, plugged it back in really quick, ran it for a while, smoked like mad at first where it was so flooded.

If there's still fuel in the line it will start and run for a few seconds then shut off. After which time you won't be able to restart it.

Wait till you get it started and then it cuts off a few seconds after your joy has fully hit you.

Then you realize you need to turn the fuel back on :p

OH that made me mad...

Yeh. I turned mine over until I had to hook up a running car to it so I could get enough spark to crank. How I did it was plug it in, turn it over some till it got good and flooded, then unpluged it and held it right almost plugged in, then cranked the car, when it started, I plugged the relay in really fast and it caught itself, was flooded really bad for about 5 minutes until it worked all the gas out.
