Angry Starter Problems!!!!

recently ive had trouble starting my car. id turn the key and the motor wouldnt turn over. i could only hear the clicking of the relay. at first i figured that it was a bad starter. now ive got a new starter installed and it still does the same thing. i have to turn the key AT LEAST 6 times before the motor turns over to start. and when it does, it sounds like its turning over really slowly. this problem is also intermitant. sometimes it happens and sometimes it doesnt. most of the time it DOESNT start on the first try though. can someone please help me out with this prob. ive already checked the wires that lead to the starter and they are on tight. dont know where else to look.

Check with a voltometer the charge of both the main connector on the starter and the smaller spade connector. If those both check out for power, you may have a flooded engine. Your description isn't really enough to describe or not describe a flooded engine

More than likely it's the key switch.

Starter interupt relay

Note his problem, his engine won't turn over in the first place. This isn't a starting the engine problem in of itself. So, flooding isn't the issue.

I've been fighting this gremlin for awhile. So far, I've bridge an additional positive power cable to the starter, moved and bolted the primary negative ground wire to the starter, replaced the starter interupt relay (this has been sited as a culprit by more than a few experts I've asked). Still have the problem.

I've also tried a wrecking yard starter and new starter, neither of which altered the symptoms.

This only thing left is a bent or loose drive sprocket (this is an automatic, for reference). I sure hope note as that would require I remove the tranny to fix. And automatics are a PITA to remove and install.

I'll let you know if this was it.

By the way, if you have a manual, I suggest you hold the key in start position and move the clutch pedal up and down (using the clutch interupt switch) to repeat the starting signal. That way you don't have the antenna going up and down, radio on and off, etc etc with each try.

well the starter is a refubished one but im still having the same problems from before i changed it so i figured that it cant be it.

if i check it with a volt meter, what readings am i looking for? im not a full blown mechanic but i can pretty much hold my own.

if its the key switch, how do i check that? am i going to have to get a new ignition?? would a faulty key switch still trip the relay when i turn it??

arrrggggg!!!!!!!

I would check all your connections. Battery posts clean and tight? Main ground wire in good shape? I chased this problem in another car for months only to figure out that the ground wire was frayed and not making a good connection.

Ok, I may have to confirm the vote for....

Starter Cut Relay.

It's the smaller of the two box things held by one 10MM bolt next the the Trailing Coils.

As update to my earlier post, I replaced mine yesterday with a wrecking yard replacement, and no starting problems since (keeping fingers crossed this maintains).

It appears these are the same 86-91.
