Starter motor?

Can someone show me a pic of where the starter is on a RX7 S5 turbo? And the best way to get at it. Thanks people.

Under the car on the left side of the transmission. about 1 to 2 feet behind the driver side front wheel toward the back.

Exactly the same mate, but obviously on our passenger side. Jack it up and put on stands then shimmey underneith, from memory its held in by two 17mm bolts.

One bolt is way in there and needs the 3/8th drive or a large extension. That same bolt is held by a nut that is kinda a pain to get to the first time. Remember to take off your power (the left of the two posts) before you take off the starter.

And don't be like me and forget to hook up ground putting it back in...

The Factory Service Manual can be found in the FAQ For FC thread. It contains all this information and more, and is an essential tool for any sort of service work that needs to be performed on these cars.

Additionally, the Haynes service manual for the 1986 thru 1991 RX-7 (both turbo and NA) can be found at most local auto parts stores or purchased from any good bookstore (ISBN number 1 56392 007 7). It is only about $25 and is a great quick reference for things like this. Not only does it contain most of the information in the FSM condensed into an easy to read format, but it includes full wiring diagrams as well.

These manuals will answer 99% of service related questions for the car and if you intend to do your own repair work, you will need at least one of them. Preferably both, since the FSM is a free download.

Yeah i've looked in the manual, always my first stop with these things. But it does tend to make things look alot simpler than they are, that's why i was asking on here. And i can never make sense of their engine diagrams. =s

So i got my starter motor! 2 Questions, that long thick wire, where does that go? Theres nothing on the end of it, looks like it was just clipped off. And that short black rubber bit, what goes in there?

Sorry for annoying you guys, but when i go under the car i like to know exactly what im doing.

ah. just incase you wanted to know about wiring your starter, i will provide you with this link.

https://www.rx7club.com/2nd-generation-specific-1986-1992-17/fd-alt-new-wiring-install-s4-480242/

that thread should explain everything to you.

that black wire goes to the battery.

the black rubber bit goes no where. its a vent.

also, dont confuse the wiring on the starter. the one with the rubber boot on there is the only thing you unbolt.

well.... thats the only thing you'd wanna unbolt from those two posts on the solenoid. there is one wire goes directly to the starter motor. leave that on there.

comprende?

Ah thanks for the help bro. Took it to work today, figured out what you mean about the bolt. And tested how it worked, ran perfect.

Have you checked the wire to the solenoid? They can get corroded and burn up, simulating a dying starter.
