Starter just clicks...

So yesterday I went to drive my car and it started up just fine...I went to back out of the garage and everything just shut off (motor, all lights). So I was trying to figure out what was going on and I noticed when I turned the wheel, the car would turn on and off. I looked and the steering column knuckle in the engine bay was rubbing through some wires. I took the column out and retaped up the wires, put some conduit around them and used hose clamps to make sure they were out of the way of the steering column. Today I start up the car and the same thing happens I had it running for 10 minutes then tried to pull out of my garage and the car just died. I had power this time but when I would try and start the car again the starter would just click. Which wire(s) going to the starter would cause this? Or is it something else? Just trying to get a head start before start tearing everything apart again.

WTF IS GOING ON?!?!?

well, around the steering area in the engine bay, the wires that I know of there are wires for the starter, and the main relay. I mean , if the main relay wires got knicked then its probably one reason why its shutting off.

Usually, when the starter just clicks, it means that not enough power is going to the starter.

I don't understand why it would just shut off though...I cut all the tape off the wires, retaped them and put loom over them. There is no way the steering column is hitting them now.

Does the main relay ground itself by being attached to the chassis? Or does it not matter?

Sounds like you may have a loose battery wire. If the harness had rubbed through you need to check for any shorted wires that may now be wrapped up.

When the car dies, does it still have power?

im gonna go out and unwrap everything again...the rack was only rubbing in one place and it only took the insulation off the wire in about a 1 inch spot. i totally rewrapped it and put loom over it but ill cut more of the tape off to see if it shorted out anywhere else. i don't remember if everything shut off the 2nd time...i know that i tried to start it again and there were still interior lights.

Check your main engine bay fuse. I had a very similar problem and that was all it was. Car out of nowhere died at a light and wouldn't start. Just clicked. I pushed started it home and then replaced the fuse and was good to go.

There is a plug under your trailing coil that has a jumered connector. If you pull that out and jump the black white wire (I'm not positive on the color of the wire, search some Hailers posts on it. I just tried but didn't find it right away.) to the positive terminal on the battery the starter should spin and will at least tell you if thats good. Make sure the car is out of gear too. lol

Is the big ground on the starter still there maybe? Just recheck your terminals.

I wouldn't be motivated either. But on the flip side. My 6 port turbo is running damn well with n/a ecu and 550/680 + afc. How's the other car coming along?
