starter cranking slow

Well I had an old stock starter that was going bad because of two symptoms I thought. First symptom being that when i would crank it I would just get a click and I would have to keep trying till it would finally crank like it should. Second problem was it would crank slower than a good starter would crank. enough to get my car started but still slow. Anyways i went to the auto store to get a new starter and thew it on. Now the clicking is completely gone but it still cranks slow. It would occationally crank fast once and then slow again with the new starter but now it's just cranking slow all the time. I would figure it had something to do with the old grounding so I cleaned all the grounds including the chassis cround and the motor ground and that still didn't help anything. i also cleaned the 12volt female connector with contact cleaner and it's still cranking slow. This really gets on my nerves as I can't get a good compression reading being that the damn starter is cranking so slow. has anyone had this problem before?

edit: also all voltage is reading good! I've got plenty of power just still crapy slow cranking speed. Also the battery is brand new heavy duty one with 690cca and the alt is practically new. Bought it a while back. My microtech always reads 14volts so I know my charging system is good.

completely replace the Manifold to Bellhousing ground, this was my cause of slow cranking, it fell of when i was replacing my clutch and when i went to start it it cranked really slowly. I ended up using it as an excuse to myself to buy a redtop optima :P, but, it turned out to be that ground, and everything cranked as it should

There are two grounds on the tranny, the main ground that bolts on through the tranny bolt, and then the smaller one that runs from the firewall to the bellhousing.

Your problem is really screwy, the thing will crank fast if you try a couple of times and will continue to crank normally, stop cranking and try to crank again and it goes slow. Damn near everything has been replaced on the bitch so I don't know what it could be. You could always try hooking a jumper cable up to your negative battery terminal and clamping it on to the tranny/engine area and seeing if that changes anything (I doubt it will).

Neither do I, we've done damn near everything short of simply replacing the positive wire and the ground cable themselves. You can try the jumper cables and running another ground and see if that helps (doubt it), or if you're really crafty you could run it to the starters positive line (this will prove difficult though and will likely end up with you arc welding)

lol, I was thinking about just running a long possitive wire to the ignition plug at the starter to see if that would work. Also I guess I could try the jumper cable thing as well. I'll try those things tomorrow to see what happens. How many times have we arc welded on accident??? I think I stopped counting hahah

Have you checked for voltage drops through your cables?

I mean, there should be no more than a 0.1 volt drop from your battery to starter. Not your terminal voltage.
