Starter compatibilty
So I have the 87 t2 m/t and went through the click click start issues etc . Now I bought a new starter and went to switch it out , only to find the solenoid on the wrong side of the housing . So my question is seeing as I ordered this for an 87 is , did I get the N/A starter or an A/T starter ? Thanks

LOL , yes , I have the t2 car tranny etc , so therefore I need the t2 starter . Are the starter housings on the n/a , t2 and a/t the same ? I should have said that the first time .

If you still have your original starter, try replacing the brushes.
Recently faced with the *click*click*crickets* issue, I went through all the suggestions in the "Solved" thread before concluding that the starter itself was at fault.
As even reman parts are pretty expensive (@$130 at the usual chain stores), I decided that it was worth $22 (from Autozone) to just replace the brushes first and see what happened.
What happened was the starter now works perfectly.
Replacing brushes used to be a regular maintenance item with all my British cars (starters AND generators) but since switching to Japanese brands it slipped my mind and was a real Hail Mary...which worked out nicely.
Replacement is simple, but not immediately obvious...the whole job (once the starter is on the bench) takes about 15 minutes.

Thanks Clokker , I was going through the extent of switching the whole motor and solenoid from the N/a over to my t2 . Just doing the brushes will be much easier

NA Manuals are off center in relation to the starter to trans mounting points, This is what causes the mounting issue on the TII tranny. TII and Auto's are mid between the starter mounting points, so good clearance from the tranny body.

More over, you probably should do a search on the sticky starter fix. I'll bet just changing out the starter won't completely cure your starting issue. Use my screen name to help narrow your search. I was the OP on that thread, but there was great contributions made by others improving on my original suggestion.

I'm into the starting system this deep : 2 ignition switches(used) , 2 starters (reman) , the replacement of the starter relay and the additional relay as shown by rotaryrocket . I still have no start or turn over . I am only gonna guess I need another switch , anyone have any suggestions ? I'm thinking of just bypassing the switch with a button .

Is the Black/Red wire in the single connector at the ignition switch getting power w/key to start? Is there any part of the system that you know of that works? You know there is an intermediate connector involved that spits the B/W wire that ends up at the starter solenoid. If the connector is poor then you likely know the outcome.

I replaced the b/w from the relay to the solenoid and still nothing . I'll test the b/r after work . All three starting solenoids have worked when jumped . I removed my turbo timer aswell to see and had the same result , not even a click .
