sputtering

When my car is running while sitting i hear this sputtering sound with bouncing rpm's, I just got my 1990 GTU 7 so im not to sure what it could be. If anyone could help i would appreciate this. And if you can help if you wouldnt use abbreviations i would really appreciate it cause i dont know what most of them mean seeing as how im new to the 7. THANKS!

I have a very slight exhaust leak that causes this on mine. My idle is usually VERY smooth, but sometimes it will sputter like that. On a cold moring I can look under my car and when it sputters I see exhaust gasses shoot out from between my Catalytic convertoer and Y-pipe. I just havn't fixed it yet.

Hope this helps.

Thanks. Im going to be putting a whole new exhaust system on soon when i can get the money. So is this also the problem of why my rpms drop and then rise again?

No.. can be tps or fuel injectors might be flooding or sticking. Might also be ignition cutoff.

I have found minor vacuum leaks to be the most frequent cause of idle problems.
