Question Sometimes my car doesnt want to start

Alright, so every so often (I'd say at most once every couple weeks) ill go to start my 88 GXL and it doesnt want to turn over... so i floor it and hold the gas all the way down and then eventually (after a second or so) it starts. How come this only happens sometimes but not always? Is this because something is starting to break or is going bad? Is there a way to fix this or remedy it so I wont have problems in the future? Let me know if you know of something or if you've had this problem and fixed it before, I'd appreciate it

i wouldnt recomend flooring while trying to turn the engine over. you could run the risk of flooding it. try checking your battery, battery lines, altenator, or your spark plugs.

battery, battery lines and alternator were all checked by an electrical shop when i first got the car, some issues were resolved and fixed at that time but nothing major was wrong. This has been going on since before i changed my spark plugs (and still does now obviously) so the spark plugs and wires were checked at that time too. Any other ideas? Oh and also, is it really that bad to floor it? cuz the car doesnt start unless i do that...

flooring it actually clears out the flooding. When you say 'doesn't want to turn over' do you mean the engine sounds different when you hit the starter, or you don't get any noise at all? it sounds to me like you're flooding occasionally.

is it not turning over at all or turning and not firing? if its not turning at all i would check batt/alternator,if its not firing but turning its probably flooded, mine did that until i installed a fuel cut off switch

flooring it in a S4 does jack as they dont have the flood protection the s5 has.

totally incorrect rxm. it is true that flooring it in a s5 is better because of the fuel cut-off. But a wot on many varieties of engine, carb fed, injected etc, can help with flooding. I've started my s4 and dirtbike many a time thanks to full throttle.

Nope. Nothing special after 10 seconds. Sorry 'bout that.

I don't see the harm in holding the throttle wide open on a series four. Can't but help things. If this is a constant problem, starting that is, then spend the five bucks for a fifteen or better amp switch and make a fuel cut switch to solve your short time problem. Then you'll have some breathing room so to speak for finding the real problem and fix it.

ok what i mean by wont turn over is like it goes "ree reee ree ree ree ree" but wont fire... an electrical shop checked my car out at one point and fixed any electrical problems i have so its nothing like that, i guess it might be that its flooded. So the fuel cutoff switch, how would i use that to make sure my car doesnt flood?

that's the 'flooded' noise. it's turning over but not firing.

until you get on the road at a stop light and it stalls out again (happened to me last week) I would suggest getting your compression checked too.

My 87 na starts up no problem, right? I drive bout 10-15 miles to wallmart at 80mph most of the way and 110mph the last 1/2 mile. When i come out of wallmart 45 min later. It wont start, well it starts, rpms go to bout 4k and then drop to 0. I look around for a minute, make sure no ones watchin, and try again. Anyway, i need to give it gas and rev it up a few times to get it to start. I think my fuel filter or fuel injectors are the cause. I change the oil every 2k with castrol 10w40. Its got 130k miles on it and still runs good so i don't think it's the engine. Should i change fuel filter? Once it took forever trying to get it to start over and over again with pedal floored and the battery being jumped. After bout 30minutes it finally started and was smoken like crazy out the tail pipe. I think that time it was flooded. I just drove it for like 90 seconds, went in my friends for a few hours. Came out got in the car wtf no start. His dad is a mechanic, right? When I got the car he says, "rotary engine ehh," "ya", "you know by design they shouldn't start," I'm like what the f*** is talking about, i guess maybe he was kinda right.

Cold weather + RX7 = Flooded start up. My last motor did it a whole lot right before the rear apex seal went. This new one does it on ocassion. There is no cure from what Ive heard.
