something weird happened

today my car really freaked me out. i drove problem free to my friends house to pick him up, got out of the car was in side for 2 minutes came back out, fired up the fc, backed out, turned around and started to go....... but it wouldnt go above 2k rpm! in fact as soon as it hit 2k rpm it jolted and then dove back down to idle. it didnt die and i wasnt flooring it or anything but the pedal was halfway down and i was at idle. when id let up and give it gas again it would go to 2k, then jolt, then back to idle. very strange it happened very suddenly too like i ran into an invisible wall. so i back it into my friends driveway (mostly coasting) and pop the hood (still running) everything looks and sounds ok so i turn it off and we leave cause the mechanic is closed anyway. well like 4 hrs later i come back warm it up and it starts fine and i cruise home like nothing happened. either way ill be seeing my mechanic tomorrow but before i go id like a better idea of what might be wrong. any ideas?

also ive been seeing alot of stuff about fcs being unreliable lately and i must say the reason this is strange is because this car has given me NO PROBLEMS except the headlight relay hates me. other than that its in great shape

Does your idiot cluster work (warning lamps)?
Did the C.E. lamp flash on?
Have you tried pulling codes from the ECU?

Just focusing in there due to the failsafe function for the OMP failing is not letting it rev over what is it...2k?
