Something Funky
Of, first off, 1987 gxl NA, 127013 miles. In winter I could drive this car for hours, stop somewhere shut it down and then it would start right back up no problems. Now in spring, temp average about 82, id run it for a few hours stop somewhere shut down, and go to start up and either it would crank with no turn over, or it would slightly catch and I flood the accel and it would finish thurning and run like a champ. I changed oil weight from 10w30 to 10w40, and as fas as I know everthing is grounded fine since I put in a hks ground kit sometime last year, changed the tps and adjusted throttle. And starter is orginal but seems to funtion fine. Any ideas?
I would've went with 20w50, don't know anyone using 10w40 it increases carbon buildup.
If its not low compression , you could have injector(s) leaking after you shut it off putting excess fuel in the combustion chamber making it hard to start on next startup and causing the engine to flood when it continues to turn over and fails to start.

I can't confirm it but I've read several posts saying that 10w40 is a bad choice, even though Mazda lists it as a choice to use its not ideal.

nah, I have made my point of conventional petrol based 10W40 and 10W50 oils should not being used for modern high rev'ng vehicles plenty of times before.
I know what I use in my cars. Since I do all the work on my cars myself (as I don't trust most professional mechanics as far as I can throw them to do the job right/professional) I know what works for me. I can say without any doubts that Castrol GTX 10W30 and 20W50 work without fail or fault in 84-95 rotary motors.
