Some Q's about my turbo
Hey everyone,
I Just finished pulling off my turbo and exhaust manifold. After that I first inspected the Exhaust manifold, Cracked as expected. Then I started looking at the turbo and I noticed 3 cracks, One right on the middle bridging thingy and the other two comming up towards the edge. I was wondering what I could do about this. Is there any solution? or do I have to resort to a new turbo?
Here is a picture of the cracks

To me, it's still okay.
Cracks in the center divider doesn't hurt anything.
Cracks running all the way out is BAD.
The two outer cracks are relatively small and short - longer and deeper ones could compromise the gasket, but I don't think this is the case for you.

it will grow though. you might be able to take it to someone who knows how to weld ( i mean good) and have them weld the crack. My unlce did that for mine. huge PITA becuase its Cast. so you have to drill a bit, grind, heat, weld and whatnot. but it will stop the crack from growing.

The cracks are from the very beginning when the engine was first started.
They are from "bad" metallurgy.
Because of the many heat cycles later, the cracks are very stable, unless you load the turbo with a lot of weight - like jumping up and down on it???

Ok, I do have a guy in mind that will most likley be able to weld it, but if that doesn't work I'll probably just resort to getting a new exhaust portion of the turbo (depending of cost, if it is within my price range I'll go with a hybrid). I do have one more question. My turbo has some shaft play. Like 1.5-2mm from side to side, I know this is bad, but how bad?
