so ive decided to rebuild....

but im broke..any suggestions on ways to save money and do the rebuild for cheaper? i need some options, also i have no engine hoist...any ideas on that either? i stripped everything off and unbolted the engine from the tranny today so its ready to pull just no way to pull it, its sitting outside, its by a tree but i do not think the tree limbs are big enough to put a hoist or anything on, any suggestions?

thanks, mike

I hate to say it but, there is really no way to save money on a rebuild. "You get what you pay for". I would make sure you get a full rebuild kit with all new seals and a gasket set also. Pulling an engine without a hoist. I have no idea. An engine hoist is pretty much a must, unless you are the world's strongest man. Those engines are very heavy. I would try to find a buddy who has a hoist, or maybe even rent one. Sorry, I'm not much help.

yes. IT depends on what your looking to do. If you in a rush to get it back on the road its not worth keeping any of it. If you want to keep any of it your gonna have to wait until you pull the engine, check everything, and THEN buy what you need...WAIT for it to come in...THEN rebuild.

Its really worth just buying the FULL kit and doing everything...i mean how many chances do you get to replace internal parts like that...MIGHT AS WELL JUST DO IT!

Apex seals are NEVER reusable, usually corner and side seals ARE. Take your time, and do it right the first time.

a bareblock isnt heavy at all ... compared to other piston engines anyway ...

you'll need something ...

i've actually witnessed a civic engine swap with no hoist ..

what they did is flatten the tires to get it as low to the ground as possible .. drop the engine on the floor ... and then raise the front of the car up high enough to pull the motor out the front ...

it was wierd to say the least

I pulled my NA motor, using a large diameter pipe (~3") and some old rapelling rope my brother had gave me.

I supported the trans, layed some old car towels on the fenders, set the pipe across the fenders, lashed the rope to the engine (using a combination of the one lifting hook and some other bolts, washers, etc.). Called for the help of my burly neighbor.

We squated under each end of the pipe and lifted. The hard part was getting it over the front of the car. You have to be able to lift the bar of your shoulder. I was the weak link here (5'8" 150 lbs.), neighbor had no trouble.

This really took some effort. Not recomended for the slightly built. Swim at your own risk!

How much did you pay for shipping on that? They want $11 to ship it here and I think thats too much for a DVD.

I pulled an engine from my Olds Cutlass with a small cable hand rachet winch..(also called a Come along)...I put about five or six 2x4's up in the rafters of the garage and wrapped a piece of chain around it and slung the winch down..hooked it to the engine and ratchet, rachet ,rachet..the engine was out..they hold 2000 pounds ..so the only thing I was worried about was the roof of the garage comin down!!..I did I think 5 engines that way..Crude but effective..oh they cost about twnety bucks..

I would have been scared crazy, if the roof broke, the engine, house, and car would all be ruinied. That takes alot of guts, maybe not with a rotary, but with a cutlass engine! That 2000 pounds is almost as much as a whole super weight reduced FC with no driver (I've seen people with only crucial parts getting FCs to 2250.
