So I started porting my wastegate tonight (56k ok)

Should I go as far as Ted went on his site (FC3Spro.com, also where pic came from)

Or should I stick with this?

Going to be in a stock port S5 TII with 2.5" dp/ps and 3" catback, at around 10 psi.

Is it necessary to go farther? How far should I go? Sorry if these are noobish questions, it's going to be my first turbo car/turbo rotary, and I want to do this stuff right the first time. I also did a quick search, turned up a few results... but wanted to hear a bit more, and some critique of my work so far.

Thanks in advance,
James

ported S5 WG from fc3spro.com:

Mine is attached.

well the previous owner of my car did some wastegate porting on my s5 turbo, but it still spikes 15psi (in 3rd and 4th, still only does 6ish in 1st) when it's cold out, even with no boost controller. I have a full 3 inch turboback exhaust and an aggressively street ported motor.

I think you should be pretty thorough with it.

EDIT: Oh you picture james was in the other direction of the FC3sPro site.

Is one suppose to be bigger than the other (turbo newb lol)

wow...

yeah, that's an s5 turbo, it has two, one is smaller than the other one.

My suggestion is just keep porting until right before you would have to put a washer on it. I have an s5 turbo on my s4 and it spikes in any gear higher than 3rd but only by enough psi to set off the fuel cut and I have a full 3in turbo back exaust. If you're going to be running 10psi then you should be ok since thats relatively high for those turbo's anyway and most of the time your wastegate won't be fully open.

You can take out as much metal as you want as long as the flap still seals both ports and you don't cut a hole through a wall. Just use common sense.

Yeah, go a lot more than that. Basically you're going to want to go as big as possible. Just keep taking material out from different angles and get everything as open as you can. The more you open it up, the more you can turn the boost up without having to worry about spiking.

I know your hesitation though, because a few months ago I ported my first s5 turbo and I was a little sketched out as well... That being said, I just shrugged it off and ported the crap out of it.

Thanks for the tips, guys. I'm gonna go to town on it, like eriksseven said.

And NZ, I've got common sense, I just wanted a second opinion because this is my first time porting a wastegate, or even messing with turbos, like I said in my original post. It's easier to take metal away, than to put it back.

Anyway, thanks again. I'm gonna get cracking on this.

James

looks good so far......id go as far as you can though....better off doing it now then having to take it apart later on down the road and porting it more....
i ported mine in a angle making it as large as possible in a angle with the lower portion wider than where the flapper touches the port....(if that makes any sense).
GOOD LUCK!

****. So I think I fucked up.

After grinding a **** load more off, I went to close the flapper door, and noticed a small crack of empty space... IE not completely sealing, on the bottom right of the smaller port. If I move the flapper with my hand, kind of positioning it, it will cover it completely. The larger port is fine. Here's some pics. The second pic is of the gap, which is very hard to see. The third is after I moved the door around.

Do I have to do this over again?

Tell me something good...

meh, I don't even really see it....

I'd say just build up a little weld on the edge where the crack is and grind/file it smooth.....just enough so it covers it.

I was thinking of that, too. Problem is I don't have access to a welder, and I was hoping to slap it back on the motor before the end of the week. ****.

Okay, that's good to know. Should the flapper door be ground flat, anyway? I'd imagine that would just help it seal better?

RE-Ted's site didn't say anything about that...

Let me know.

James
