smokin

I finally ended up buying my FC after I checked the compression and it turned out good. Now I am busy nursing it back to health, it has been sitting for years!

My first major problem is that it smokes really bad, but only when revved over around 4000 rpm's. It never smokes until I rev it over that point and when it dropps back below that point it stops pretty quick. It's white smoke, coming from the tail pipes.

Please help, Ed

If it helps the car had not been driven much in the couple years before I bought it. I'm thinking maybe too much oil is getting into the chambers from the seals being shrunk up from sitting. Or maybe the omp is giving too much oil when I put my foot into it?

Thanks, Ed

Anyone have any ideas for me? It's a real pain when I have to drive under 3500 rpm's all the time unless I want tons of smoke billowing out my tail pipes! Someone please give me something to work with i don't know where to start.

Are all the sensor plugged in and working? I was doing work to my TB and I forgot to plug my AFM (MAF) back in and when I started it tons of white smoke poured out of the exhaust.

Also, white smoke = coolant, right?

If so, perhaps a bit of coolant is leaking into the chambers. Smell the exhaust and see if it smells rich or anything, then keep a close eye on all your fluid levels to see if it's eating anything.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the input. I think it's oil though because I just changed the oil a couple days ago so I know it was full. Then I ran my motor at 4000 rpm's to try to run out whatever was causing the smoke and when I checked my oil today it was low. Maybe it's the oil seals from sitting for so long? Today I put in some seal conditioner maybe it will help. Hope so. Keep the ideas comin. Smokes worrying me.

Thanks, ed

Penko I don't have a turbo. I used some engine oil seal conditioner my mechanic buddy gave me I don't know what kind, but I trust him. Then he had me try a bit of that motor honey stuff to see if oil was pushing past seals. Guess what it does not smoke nearly as bad now sometimes not at all. So I now know the problem has to do with the oil seals. I don't know if they are cracked or if just shrunk from sitting. Maybe it will get better after I put some miles on it. Is there anything I can do to revive the seals other than new ones.

pull ur starter fuse, pull ur leading spark plugs, shoot atf(automatic tranny fluid) in ur plug holes, hit ur ignition so it turns alittle, shoot it in again, hit the ignition again, keep doing this until u know its pretty full of atf. put ur plugs back in. leave it sit for 24 hrs. put ur fuse back in, start her up,rev the engine a few times, watch the smoke roll for about 10 mins or more. . put new spark plugs in and ur set. it worked for mine it should work for urs.

tripp87gxl were you burning oil before you did the atf trick? Also how much atf did you use for the whole process? Half a quart or what?

yea i was burning a **** load of oil. it was about half a qt maybe a little more. just make sure u get it in every chamber. and make sure u start it outside. u might even wanna let ur local fire company know b4 u do it so they on't think ur house is on fire or sumthin.

Thats great maybe my motor is saveable. I'll try the atf trick and see if it helps the oil burning. One question how do you turn the motor to get to the next chamber?

Thanks, is there anything else I should know before trying it? Tips? How long did you leave it in and does your car burn any oil now?

not really just make sure its in every chamber. i left it in for about 24 hrs but i also did the treatment twice(i was really smokin b4 hand). the first time i did it it got better. and i did it like 3 or 4 days later again and i haven't had any probs since.

ATF treatment sounds like a great idea to try, Sounds like (to me) yer oil control rings are bad... Happened to me before my motor went... if my car wasn't warmed to normal operating temps, and I just drove it slow (under 3k rpm) it would shoot out HUGE white clouds...

Once up to operating temp, it wouldn't smoke unless I punched it, between each shift.. puffs of smoke... Hope the ATF helps!

instead of using the starter

you can use the nut on the main pulley with a ratchet. use the timing mark so you can put it in the three 120 degree spots 120x3=360 three sides of a triangle, rotor. do it for each rotor. then you know you got a three chambers and you don't have to pull any fuses or pump any fuel in it. Once you get all the fluid in there, you could turn the motor in the oppisite dirrection to get both side of the seals soaking. the longer you let it sit the better but 24 at least. good luck, iv'e got to do mine again, work a little first time, 150k miles of crude.

Ya my car smokes a lil when first started but runs fine. I have holes in exhaust which I think contributes to the smoking. Do you guys think the ATF trick will stop the small amount of smoking? Either way its a good idea to do it soon huh? Thanks.
