Smoke and a vacuum leak

This week I tried to fix a 6th ports problem in my RX-7. It turned out that the actuators themselves are bad so I just didn't put the sleeves back in. Once I got everything put back together I started the car up and it wouldn't stay running. I had also replaced the tps so I adjusted that and tried again. This time the car stayed running, but it idled horribly, shaking some and smoke started coming from the bay. It appeared to be coming from between where the intake and exhaust manifolds meet the block. I did not touch the exhaust so I assume it is coming from the lower intake manifold. There is also a vacuum leak, because I could completely close the idle adjust screw on top of the TB and the engine kept running. Could these two problems be one in the same? I don't see why smoke would be coming out of the intake tract. I also got rid of the split air pipe and blocked off the passage on the lower intake manifold. This couldn't cause a problem could it?

Any and all help would be greatly appreciated. I have to get the car road-worthy by tommorow afternoon.

possible lower intake manifold leak which will cause all of the symptoms

btw u got rid of the split pipe did u get rid of the acvc system (the system between the two actuators) and block that off and remove the air pump?

if not that can be your problem

No, I did not get rid of that system or the air pump. I suppose i could since I don't need it to actuate the ports since the sleeves are out. I will search about removing that system.

Thank you for the speedy reply.

it is simple. u remove the 3 bolts holding the acvc system in remove the one stud left over make a block off plate, use some RTV and 3 new SS screws and bolt it in place.. just just pull the air pump off and block off the nipple on the stock air box

Thanks, that may help. I made a plate and got it on (using silicon). I am assuming that I still block off the area where the split air pipe connected to the manifold, but there is another tube that comes from in front of the radiator that also connected to the acv system. Should I block it off or reroute it somewhere else?

the air tube from the back of the manifold u dont have to block off it went to the acv and is no longer being used I have found there to be no vacuum or pressure comming from that hose.

the hose comming from the radiator to the engien bay right now that goes to nothing u can pull it all out or leave it open.. thats what I did
