smoke, overheat, blah, blah

So I just recently bought an '88 se just to nab a bumper cover and fender off and maybe some other cosmetic things before I unload it.

The car has 138k miles on it, smokes white when it is turned on and continues a light smoke afterwards. After a few minutes it overheats and won't idle. All tell-tale signs of a rebuild. Only thing is the coolant seems fine-- there's quite a bit in the overflow--, and the oil seems fine (actually not sure about the oil-- will have to check again).

Basically I want to know before I part it out if the car may have some things that may be causing the issue that isn't a blown engine.

If exhaust is escaping into the coolant.

Maybe do the "block weld" trick - it might work if it's not too late.
