i got an 87 and it smells like i m burning oil. is this a frequent problem with anyone?

 

its an rx7 they all burn oil they have oil injectors

 

Is there heavy smoke coming out of the exhaust and if so, what color?

 

hey, i m new at this...there isnt heavy smoke coming out of the exhaust, my one friend is telling me its clutch, but i dont think hes right

 

the engine has oil injectors that make it burn oil during the combustion cycle for lubrication. you'll lose a quart every several hundred miles. also...for some reason or another lots of rx7s leak oil from random places. that may be what you're smelling as well, oil dripping onto a hot engine.

 

Umm..can you differentiate the smell of a slipping clutch between oil? If you give the car lots of revs while feathering the clutch, you can start to smell burning metal. That would be the clutch.

 

Slipping clutch and burning brakes smell the same. If you want to know what burning oil should smell like, drop one drop on a hot exhaust manifold. You'll get the picture.

Make me wonder when we can buy the Wonka "Smell-O-Vision".

 

mine burns a quart every 1000 or so..is that too little?
