Small Performance options on a budget

Hey guys,

Im a new guy on the forum. I own a 91 RX-7 FC3C. I have done many things to it already like exhaust, intake, and those little things. I want a little bit more power. I should be getting about 175 to 180 hp right now but i would like to know if you all have any suggestions on what to get that won't make the insurance company charge a billion dollars when I put a big fancy mod on. Turbos and NOS would probably make the insurance go up, soo..if you know of anything, please let me know.

Thanks a lot

Well those things wont really make your insurance go up because they will never finmd out unless you get caught using that nitrouis on the street and get ticketed/impounded.

But if you want to stay n/a go tothe 2nd gen archives section and look for the "beefy n/a" thread.

First off, its nitrous, NOS is a Holley product. Just so you know. Nitrous has nothing to do with insurance anways.

175-180 would only be acheived threw porting or new intake manifolds that would be custom built.

Honestly before certain people come into this thread yelling for you to do turbo you should think about a V8 swap. It costs the same as a TII swap with much more gains. It'll do everything you'd want if you with-hold from doing mods for a while and save.

If you'd like to stay NA I'de suggest getting your engine streetported. Biggest gains for the buck in an NA. If you don't have the cash for that I say: buy a safc, weight reduction, wideband, isloate the filter for cold air, GTU's ring and pinion, and a new clutch/flywheel (won't add HP but would spice it up).

First test the Aux ports & VDI for proper operation, if you haven't already.

I saw a nice header on e-bay yesterday.

hahaha..........a full T2 block and tranny will cost WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY less than a V8 swap......don't listen to the heretic........if you want more power check the beefy NA thread........if you want even MORE power install a TII motor.

you can have a stock TII motor and tranny match up to your stock NA rear end and if you get the same series (s4 with s4 turbo or s5 with s5 turbo) the install will be much easier....plug and play. the V8 conversion will need a motor, custom mounts, tranny, custom mounts, custom driveshaft, special rear end to handle the torque.........and it will sound wrong.

hahahaha....I'd love to see that.......

Super-Air Fuel Controller(S-AFC from APEX-i)- controls the injectors and helps you fine tune for higher power.

TB mod is a good one, pineapple racing sleeves help a bit, lighten your car as much as possible..........the Beefy NA thread will go into more detail but if you want to hit 300-400+ HP you'll need to go turbo(whether it is a full TII swap or turbo charging your NA *search*)

or *shudder* go V8

Unless you port the TB while its out, theres not much point in most of the TB mod on an NA. The main easy power gains on an NA will be with exhaust and intake. Past that the only thing that will give a substantial boost in power (without taking the motor apart, at least) is an S-AFC and a proper tune. After than, you can maybe gain a tiny bit with removing the rest of the emissions.
I would concentrate on helping handling, and reducing weight if your really hardcore.

v8 swap

For someone like me a V8 swap would be much cheaper than a TII I could source an engine and tranny for dirt cheap, rebuild it for about $1000 with some minor tweaks, build all the mounts and stuff myself and drop it in. But then again most people don't have access to 150 race shops within 50 miles of their house, lol, or work at one for that matter.

I would NEVER put a piston engine in my RX-7 though.

My pickup is a different story though.

^^^ I have 4 BBC sitting in my garage, and a few TH400s...

After adding the price up for brackets and crap from granny's speed shop

i still dont think a v8 swap is cheaper.

It is cheaper, it's been done many times. Just think of the $2005 challenge, and all the v8 rx7s in it.

Here we go again.

Can someone please agree with me on this? Whether you drive an N/A, TII, or V8 RX7 it's expensive as hell! Period.

While I can respect the fact that many of us love challenges and are always trying to be innovative, the truth of the matter is I have seen more N/A owners ask about turbocharging or supercharging their car for more power. While I admit that there are those among us who have sucessfully done this, it is a very time consuming and expensive process, and you need to know what your doing. It's all custom work.

Simple answer to all these "want more power threads" if you own an N/A and you want the power of a TurboII, sell it and buy a TII.

I speak from experience. I loved my 88SE it was great to kick around in and tear up the streets but then I wanted more power so I did research and found it was just as expensive as buying a TII. So I sold it and bought my yellow beast!

I would have, but nobody was selling any TII convertibles in my area. Taking my old, tired NA out and putting in a TII myself was the only way I could get one

Its understandable that you couldnt find one, because the TII convertible was never sold in the US.
