Slammed into a curb today.

I was taking a slow right turn when my front end started sliding. I ended up hitting the curb pretty hard. The alignment is definately messed up. Otherwise everything else seems fine. It pulls hard to the left and when I take a sharp left turn I can hear a grinding sound. I'm guessing the left tire is hitting the wheel well. For those that have been in this situation. What else can I expect for damage? I'm hoping I'll just need to get the front tires realigned, but knowing my luck it'll be more. However, I'm hoping it isn't anything extremely costly or irreparable.

most common damage would consist of, most common(1) to least common(4) damaged items:

1) tie rods bent
2) camber pushed in, damaged strut may be adjustable may need to be replaced
3) damaged lower control arm/and or bushings
4) pushed in strut tower and or body/frame damage

i don't know where you live but if you can find an FC in a wrecking yard i almost always see parts for 1-3 there, if you did manage to damage the frame or strut tower it will need a body shop to repair it.

i've worked on many damaged front ends and more often than not it is a tie rod bent and a strut that is knocked in but still adjustable to specs if you get a camber kit installed and replace the affected tie rod, then an alignment is needed.

Don't forget to check your rims carefully.

oh yea, add that in the middle of the list between 2 and 3, bent wheels/damaged tires.

bent wheels won't cause a pull but they will cause a shimmey and or a vibration at varying speeds, rotating the questionable wheel to the rear of the vehicle will cause a definite change in feel in the steering wheel and body which is a good indication you need a new wheel and or tire.

i don't think he would have made it far with a broken ball joint... =P

ball joints are actually quite tough, i have seen suspension systems crumpled but the ball joints still in one piece, but it is worth checking also.

Thanks for all the information, from the place of impact I did a quick look over and didn't notice anything noticeably wrong, then drove it to a gas station that was roughly a mile away. The wheel didn't seem to be bent, but the lower portion seems to have gotten pushed closer to the center of the car.

Tie rod
tie rod end
bushings
control arm (ball joint)
spindle
rack n pinion
control arm
cross member
sway bar
rim

This is all the things i needed to replace. Everything but the strut and springs was replaced.
I power slided into a curb probably goin 60-70mph. Fixed everything and got new rims and S0-3 tires for the price of you named it $1000. I was lucky on getting my things for so cheap and did everything myself.

Now the car is running perfectly and have T2 motor waiting for me to put in. Just pick up a JIC Magic 90 Spec turbo back (this thing is HUGE 3.5 inches baby), at AutoRnd, Thanks Rishie for the great deal. A couple major parts ( STand alone and FMIC) and all the small things like fluid and ill have my GTUs Turbo.

GTUs turbo is in production thanks to my employer Magnussen's LEXUS ,that signs me checks so i can spend it, and Rishie at AutoRnD, for the sponcership.

ball joints are tough, but if they pop loose while driving, you crash, and not in a good way. if there is any doubt, replace the ball joint.

Lmao...yeah thats what I was thinking. I'm trying to imagine in my head how a front end just starts sliding at low speeds, unless this guy was driving in the snow.

It is possable to slide out slowly. There are many reasons:

Oil on the road, Snow, Ice, Rain+Oil, etc etc.

And bad tires only amplify that.

I read about your grinding on left turns, and thought, my car humms on right turns for some reason. :O I shold get that checked :p

lol, I was going to write the same thing. One thing I've seen alot on this forum is that all these sports car drivers are driving slow when all of the sudden thier car looses control and smacks into something I'm sure that will be my story one day to.

i prolly did just as bad when i hit a curb spinning out in the rain going 60 mph onto an off ramp spinnin into a 360 into the curb, i bent the lower control arm and i replaced it , and its still off... my tire is now a slick because of the shitty alignment, never got it fixed cuz i could care less a bout that beast

its surprising that we always say we were going slow when the car started to slip or what not when in fact we were going fast lol.

For the record it was raining out, but given how fast I was going there's a pretty good chance that I probably hit a patch of oil on the road. I probably could have corrected it in time it the road didn't happen to be a one lane, one-way road with a curb on each side. Well, I had it checked out and the ball joint and strut need to be replaced. It's not catastrophic, but costly enough.
