Single vs Duel Exhuast?

why did mazda design the 87-91 rx-7 with duel exhaust?
dosent it decrease the proformance?
since the the two pipes connect back into one?
wouldent it be more benificial to just have one exhaust?

I personally feel it's just for show. I can picture how on a piston engine with two banks of cylinders (V-6, F-4, F-6, V8, etc.) might push spent gases through two pipes better, but it doesn't make sense on a rotary engine.

Every couple of months it seems this question comes up.From what I gather it is just a matter of personal taste,or which look you like better.I have yet to see someone prove performance wise that one style is better than the other.I've the dual gives alittle better mid-range but that is probably negligable.I am talking about cat-backs here as the true dual system like Mazdatrix sells is a horse of a different color.

I'd have to believe that it was just a styling decision on Mazda's part. 1st gens were single, as are 3rd gens-- so it's probably not due to power gain.

The factory dual setup is heavy, I probably shaved 50lbs off my whole exhaust system, probably 10lbs per muffler. The precats were also incredibly heavy.

Like Dak said, unless you're talking a true dual system, whatever floats yer boat.

I went with the single to save both weight & cost. That made it a no brainer for me. I am sure Mazda just went duel for the looks...

Duals, in theory, should be quieter for the same flow resistance... a larger muffler is quieter than a smaller muffler, likewise two mufflers in parallel are quieter than a single muffler given the same HP loss.

So Mazda puts two relatively restrictive, large, quiet mufflers on a car, instead of one freer-flowing yet louder muffler for the same HP level.

Plus it looks better.
