simple air pump question

I want to lose some weight and clean up my engine bay. In my area there is no smog nor emmision inspections. Is it alright to remove the air pump? From what I know about it all it seems to do is feed air to the cats for emmision purposes right?

On some N/As it opens the 6 ports...if you have a turbo, you'll be okay, but you'll need an acv blockoff plate too. They can be found at www.mazdatrix.com

I have been thinking of doing the same thing. I just took out my A/C pump, cooler, and everything else for A/C.

If I wanted to go straight pipes all the way through, the air pump wouldn't be needed anyway. Right??

Someone told me that taking off the air pump would blow up my mufflers. I thought that sounded a little weird if it is just for emissions and not pressure.

well from doing searches on the board about this I know that removing the air pump will cause the cats to clog up. I'm pretty sure this could cause ur car to run rich. Dont hold me to that though. Over all though, it seems to be the opinion of everyone that this shouldnt be done unless you dont have any cats.

Yeah, I agree. I wouldn't do it if you still have cats. Otherwise it shouldn't do any harm. On the 89-91 NAs, the air pump does aid in opening the 5th and 6th ports by providing the extra pressure (that the exhaust doesn't provide) to reach the 1.8lbs of pressure needed to open up the secondary (5th and 6th) ports.

Yes, don't do it unless you remove the converters. You'll ruin the main cat with no air pump.

So -- If I dont have cats, and i want to remove the air pump what do i need to do to ensure opening of the 5th and 6th ports?

Also, what to do with the hose that was pumping air through my cat??

Thanks

So you have an 89 na but your name is 88 na??

Anyway, I want you to try this: take off your air pump. Give it a spin by hand. Spins free and easy dont it? Thats how much energy your engine takes to spin it. No much at all. I guarantee you wont feel it with the butt dyno. Now, with the air pump off, go for a ride, being sure to tach it out a few times. Runs slow as **** ont he top end dont it? Also note that without the air pump belt, the water pump has a greater opportunity to slip, causing possible overheating concerns. Wanna lose an engine over 1/10 of a horsepower?

Return home and re-install the air pump :-)

Yeah, I agree with the previous post. Leave it on unless you wire open the 5th and 6th ports, or set them up to open electronically.

what's better is that you can use the air pump to push air in the intake instead of exhasut, so you get a slight supercharger effect. pretty cool. i did this once.
