Simple advice
I bought porting templates this summer for my 86 n/a. I have ported the intake but don't have the tools to do the exhaust or the money to buy turbo housings. Since I'm only using mazdatrix's street port templates will I still gain a little power by just using the intake? I need to get the car going again but don't have the money for more things to do. Please give me some advice.
Well, I can tell you I was happy with the increase in power from just an intake street port. When I rebuilt my motor at 195Kmi I sent the end housings and intermediate housing to Mazdatrix to have them lapped. Since they had the parts there I had them do a street port. The exhaust has a very hard metal that you will have fun trying to grind off as I have heard. If you really want to mess with exhaust, think about a new header. Mazdatrix sells a nice one.
Where is McClouth? PM me, I may be able to help you out on the exhaust porting. Unless you are porting with a dremel and stones, a good carbide burr will do the housings, once the diffusers are removed.

The tools to port the exhuast are exactly as those used to port the intake. You would use the exact same die grinder and bits. In general the exhaust is much easier to do then the intake since it's nearly impossible to run into the water jacket or do something stupid.
Edit...Wait a sec, I just reread the topic. You are planning on going turbo? And you're worried about not having the proper tool to port the exhaust? This will not turn out well...

I'm sure I can do the exhaust but not sure on removing the diffuser. I found the dowel pins that hold the diffuser, but not sure how to remove them. I have carbide bits, stones, everything needed, but am lacking experience.

I have everything for the turbo but have been working on the car all summer and still not finished. But after loosing almost all om my hair and thinking of just selling the car, I decided I need to get around to finishing it. That is if I get over my gun buying addiction.

Carbide cutting bits are fairly useless for the diffuser. Grinding stones are what you need. With stones, even the lowly Dremel can grind then diffuser away, it just take a while. Get some nice rough grinding stones then start at the corner of the "wing". Grind the bend down and then rock the wing back and forth with pliers until it snaps off. Then simply grind down the remaining "ledge".
