Very simple, I did it yesterday in a matter of minutes.

First, remove the FTP lenses.
Second, file down the stuff that they screwed into.

Done.

Looks damn, damn good at night, no more popups to worry about, bright enough to illuminate the whole road (without brights), and maybe some cool air coming in.

Worth every penny.

 

there is no way it lights up good enough, I wouldn't call that very safe. did you just pull the fuse out? or how do they stay down?

 

I have a kill switch installed that I used to control my sleepy lights.

It really does light up WELL enough. I drove around quite a bit last night with them down with no problems.

As long as the lenses are gone there is nothing to stop the light since it is a straight through shot. If you don't believe me, take out the lenses tonight (don't grind anything down), pull the retractor fuse, and take it for a quick little spin. True, it isn't as bright as all the way up, but definitely bright enough (maybe not for country driving though).

 

I dont see how that lights up too much either, the only thing i can think of, is if someone made a magnifying lens to replace the FTP lens.... but.. thats more trouble than its worth really, unless you REALLY dont like pop up lights. I kinda do like them myself.

how can that be bright enough to drive... the area the FTP lights are so small compared to the whole head light when up.

You gotta remember the the light (pop up lights) don't just have a light bulb in them, behind the light bulb is a bunch of reflective material in the shape of a parabola to concentrate the light and allow the light to be focused and shot out to provide max luminescity (sp?) by restricting the light through those little FTP holes theres no way they are as bright

 

Roy James - Like I said, I understand that it doesn't light up as much, I'm not denying that. All I'm saying is that it lights up enough to see. If you don't believe me, try it.

PSIGOD - I did it because I don't like the idea of my headlights being perpindicular with the road.

Cheers - Again, I understand how the lights work. I didn't think they would light up nearly enough either. Only after trying it did I see that it works.

Guys, I'm not trying to be an *** about this and saying it's better than the stock lights. What I am doing is helping out guys like me who dislike pop-up lights but don't have $2500 to drop into a kit.

I appreciate constructive criticism, but please don't tell me it's not bright enough to drive until after you try it because I did it and it was plenty bright for me.

 

In some states it's illegal not to have your lights up when they are required to do so. I know that for a fact, because here in st.louis when i took out the fuse and kept them down so that they would light through FTP, cop pulled me over and gave me a tiket for that, it was 66 dollars.
Just my opinion.

 

Got pulled over two nights ago at about 9:30 pm, with sleepy lights, doing 45 in a 25, and an expired insurance card (august of 01).

No ticket

put your fog light on at the same time.. That would look sick I bet. Im sure I wuoldnt get pulled over hear in cali unless I was doing something else like speeding.

That would be quite tight. I've seen sleepy lights (ftp lenses in) with fog lights and it looks badass. I plan to pick up my fog/driving lights in the next month or two, so maybe I'll post a pic of it then.

stop bitching guys. redwood i have tried that before on my 86 and i kinda liked it. different look. and u could see well enough.

 

The lights are in the same position down as they are up, I don't understand this?

 

i like this mod, i have done it too. looks good if you have the stock height on the car. i installed bright white halogens and it is bright enough. looks much better than those old bright yellow lights that blinded everyone. i like the headlights up if the car is lowered.

i dont know if you guys noticed but if you take off the black plastic pieces around the headlight assembly and cut a section of the blcak rubber that hangs off the tip of the hood (theres about 3 inches) between the right corner of the headlight cover and radiator. a little more air should flow into the intake area. of course this is only if your lights stay in the down position.

 

i drive with mine down, only in poorly light areas when ive got someone with brights or them blue lights on is it hard to see, but then, it can be hard when i have them up to. no light country roads are fine, no glare on the shield and brights help alot when no obstructing others. i may cut the ftp tabs out and that wouldmake it better.

 

Are you lights different than mine? My lights shine parallel, or very close to parallel, with the road. If they were perpendicular, then they would be either shining at the ground or in the trees. If you are referring to the lenses of the lights being perpedicular with the road, I understand that, but they are the same up or down. Are you afraid something will hit and break the lenses? I can see the FTP hole guarding the lens a bit, if that's what you mean.

Accept it for what it is-a SUGGESTION-and no more. If you don't think it's a good idea, then state that and no more, but he wasn't claiming that it was THE way to do things.
