What do you guys think about this headlight idea? It costs $0
You might think its stupid, but disconnect the motors in the lights and turn the brights on-walla-the light comes through the clear lense. for some reason I think everyone already knew this

all you have to do is pull the turn signal lever back so that your brights are on, and wedge a nickel behind the left edge of the lever.
works like a charm, and if you need your lights up, you can still put them up.

Ive driven with the bright lever back manually, and they still threw a good amount of light, definetely enough for driving. The nickel thing sounds like a good idea-but too much of a pain in the ***, pullin the fuse would be easy and if you got pulled over for it you could just pop it back in I suppose. But since my arrest, Im not gonna be doing any driving for quite some time.

I have been using them for about half a year this way and rx-7 does look pretty cool the only diferense is that i use a switch in order to power them all you have to do is take off your console find the adaptor witch plugs in the turn switch and make the appropriate connections. This way you will be able to turn them on only when you realy want to. For example i turn on my light switch at posssition 1 and then use my extra switch to turn them on or i go to possition 2 and the normal lights pop up. It's not dificult just be very carefull with the wires you really don't wan't yo start a fire between your legs. Also they are pretty good when you want to run away from police you only turn on the secret switch and you have only your front lights switched on and if you want to see better you can use the retractable headlight switch and u have your normal lights without your back lights turned on. How's that

It's an easy mod to do in your driveway, I've done it and hopefully can find a pic somewhere...
Buy enough wire to make 2 trips from a switch you will put in the car to the engine bay fuse box. Buy a switch.
Find the retractor fuse and cut the wire leading to it. Leave some room connect a wire from where the wire comes out of the fuse box. I believe this wire is yellow (in an '86 GXL).
From the fuse box the new wire you hooked up will go alll the way to your switch, and back again to the fuse box where you connect it to the remaining cut wire. Done!
With the switch off, when you turn on the light they will stay in the down position as the circuit is broken to pop them up. When _on_ the circuit is completed and the headlight will pop up.
Looks cool even in daylight and cost $5 or less.
edit: you won't get the warning that you have left your lights on anymore. Be careful.

I've been driving around with my lights down shining through the FTP lenses since the middle of last summer.. I've driven right by cops several times at night.. Got a few strange looks but nothing more.. And there's plenty of light with the brights on for regular driving.. It just gets a bit scary doing a top speed run with em like that

You're crazy to drive around with the headlights shining just through the FTP lenses.  I had one of my actuator rods broke, so I did this for a few weeks.  Even with both FTP lenses pulled, there was barely enough light to drive around with!

My thoughts-
Not safe for regular driving at all.
You must also remember that for those us us with factory fog/auxilliary lights turning on the brights turns the fogs off- requires rewiring.
If this mod is to be done, it should be for temporary use only.
About the motor interrupt method a few posts back- why not wire the relay to the headlight retractor switch that's already there?? If it needs to be isolated, use a diode.
Thats way, you can always control if you want your lights up/down/on/off in any combo by using the stock switches.
If you do something, do it once, and do it right. (Confuscious or Smokey Yunik?)

I dunno, I guess I've got bright lights or somthing.. Cause I've had no problems. And it works especially good at avoiding deer. Since the lights are so low and turned down, deer dont stop in the road.... And I had enough light to see them from far enough away to give me plenty of time to slow down. Like I said... It works great for me under normal driving conditions. Just when I pick up the pace it can get a bit scary. So I usually limit my extreme driving for daylight in the country. Anyway... If you cant see well with your lights through your FTP lenses.. Dont do it... If you can, it works great, lowers drag, and makes the car look nicer at night. I guess its an individual thing..

But as i said before, be very carefull with the connections.
All you need is a simple on/off switch and ofcourse a cable which will be cut in two pieces about 20cm each. As you understand you don't have to disable/cut/remove anything.

The clear ones are called "Flash to Pass" lights. They are designed so that you pull on the signal light lever and they light up. Just make the lever get stock with something and that is it. It is a lot easier than installing switches and stuff.
