Sick of pop-up headlights? FREE MOD!!!

Very simple, I did it yesterday in a matter of minutes.

First, remove the FTP lenses.
Second, file down the stuff that they screwed into.

Done.

Looks damn, damn good at night, no more popups to worry about, bright enough to illuminate the whole road (without brights), and maybe some cool air coming in.

Worth every penny.

Scott 89t2 02-03-02 04:27 PM

there is no way it lights up good enough, I wouldn't call that very safe. did you just pull the fuse out? or how do they stay down?

Redwood 02-03-02 04:41 PM

I have a kill switch installed that I used to control my sleepy lights.

It really does light up WELL enough. I drove around quite a bit last night with them down with no problems.

As long as the lenses are gone there is nothing to stop the light since it is a straight through shot. If you don't believe me, take out the lenses tonight (don't grind anything down), pull the retractor fuse, and take it for a quick little spin. True, it isn't as bright as all the way up, but definitely bright enough (maybe not for country driving though).

Roy James 02-03-02 04:45 PM

I dont see how that lights up too much either, the only thing i can think of, is if someone made a magnifying lens to replace the FTP lens.... but.. thats more trouble than its worth really, unless you REALLY dont like pop up lights. I kinda do like them myself.

Later

PSIGOD 02-03-02 04:48 PM

why would you want to do this in the first place ?

Cheers! 02-03-02 04:52 PM

how can that be bright enough to drive... the area the FTP lights are so small compared to the whole head light when up.

You gotta remember the the light (pop up lights) don't just have a light bulb in them, behind the light bulb is a bunch of reflective material in the shape of a parabola to concentrate the light and allow the light to be focused and shot out to provide max luminescity (sp?) by restricting the light through those little FTP holes theres no way they are as bright

Redwood 02-03-02 05:04 PM

Roy James - Like I said, I understand that it doesn't light up as much, I'm not denying that. All I'm saying is that it lights up enough to see. If you don't believe me, try it.

PSIGOD - I did it because I don't like the idea of my headlights being perpindicular with the road.

Cheers - Again, I understand how the lights work. I didn't think they would light up nearly enough either. Only after trying it did I see that it works.

Guys, I'm not trying to be an ass about this and saying it's better than the stock lights. What I am doing is helping out guys like me who dislike pop-up lights but don't have $2500 to drop into a kit.

I appreciate constructive criticism, but please don't tell me it's not bright enough to drive until after you try it because I did it and it was plenty bright for me.

In some states it's illegal not to have your lights up when they are required to do so. I know that for a fact, because here in st.louis when i took out the fuse and kept them down so that they would light through FTP, cop pulled me over and gave me a tiket for that, it was 66 dollars.
Just my opinion.

Redwood 02-03-02 05:12 PM

Got pulled over two nights ago at about 9:30 pm, with sleepy lights, doing 45 in a 25, and an expired insurance card (august of 01).

No ticket :D

Hey Redwood, i was typing my last post when you put yours in, so i didnt see you said "It really does light up well enough" or something to that effect, please dont jump on my shit about it. I was just stating my opinion. Nice to clear that up. Thank you

That's the hostility that no one likes. I'm sorry that there was a mistake. It was neither your fault nor mine so it isn't even a problem. I don't believe that I jumped on your shit either, but it doesn't matter anyway. If I sounded like I was too ass-like, I do apologize. I also understand that it was your opinion, but I was only stating mine, too. I, too, am glad we cleared that up. No hard feelings I hope. Thanks.

That would be quite tight. I've seen sleepy lights (ftp lenses in) with fog lights and it looks badass. I plan to pick up my fog/driving lights in the next month or two, so maybe I'll post a pic of it then.

The lights are in the same position down as they are up, I don't understand this?

dvst8-rx7 02-04-02 04:59 AM

looks nice..i made a switch instead of pulling the fuse...much easier...
looks awesome with fog lights....never been pulled over at night (yet)
haha

Grimlock 02-04-02 11:08 AM

i agree....

i like this mod, i have done it too. looks good if you have the stock height on the car. i installed bright white halogens and it is bright enough. looks much better than those old bright yellow lights that blinded everyone. i like the headlights up if the car is lowered.

i dont know if you guys noticed but if you take off the black plastic pieces around the headlight assembly and cut a section of the blcak rubber that hangs off the tip of the hood (theres about 3 inches) between the right corner of the headlight cover and radiator. a little more air should flow into the intake area. of course this is only if your lights stay in the down position.

snoopster76 02-04-02 11:22 AM

i drive with mine down, only in poorly light areas when ive got someone with brights or them blue lights on is it hard to see, but then, it can be hard when i have them up to. no light country roads are fine, no glare on the shield and brights help alot when no obstructing others. i may cut the ftp tabs out and that wouldmake it better.

Are you lights different than mine? My lights shine parallel, or very close to parallel, with the road. If they were perpendicular, then they would be either shining at the ground or in the trees. If you are referring to the lenses of the lights being perpedicular with the road, I understand that, but they are the same up or down. Are you afraid something will hit and break the lenses? I can see the FTP hole guarding the lens a bit, if that's what you mean.

NCsublime 02-04-02 01:25 PM

Geez guys!

Quit whining! You sound like a bunch of babies. A nice young man decided he would share some suggestive information with you guys, and all you can do is whine and bitc* about it. Accept it for what it is-a SUGGESTION-and no more. If you don't think it's a good idea, then state that and no more, but he wasn't claiming that it was THE way to do things. He was just throwing out an idea. It's not like he's earning commision if more people do it. To all you flamers:

GROW UP!

Peace,
Derek

P.S. Thank you to the post-starter for offering suggestions. How do you think humans have developed the technology we are capable of? It's called trial and error. Open-mindedness is quite important.
