ShouldI upgrade the 10th AE?

I just found a pretty nice 10th Anniversary a few days ago. My other car, an 87 TII has a bunch of mods on it (60-1, FMIC, etc). I'm trading the TII (returned to stock) to a friend for his 88 vert as a present for the GF.

My problem is that I'll have all these go-fast parts and a rather rare car. The engine bay on the AE is in super great shape. I've only seen a couple of 7s in this condition. Should i keep it stock and have to do nothing with all these parts, or should I drop them in it like Dale Clark and a few others have?

If I install them, I intend to make it a VERY clean job. Also, I don't intend to get rid of this car EVER.

What do you guys think?

I also have a 10th Ann.....
I have been debating same thing but the conclusion that I have come up with is .....
JUST DO IT!!!
If you invest $10K into car, it will be exactly how you want it and the car will stomp out between 400-500 HP....
I can't think of a new car that you can buy with that much Hp and a full custom look!!!!

The AE engine is the same as any other 1988 Turbo II. You should modify it and make it faster. Don't put any crazy body kits on or change the color since the exterior and interior is what makes the AE special. I'm going to buy the East Bear flat headlight kit and Knightsports rear wing. I'm going to keep the bumpers and everything else stock.

I vote NO.

There are plenty of T2s out there that are NOT rare. Upgrade one of them. I'm looking for a 10AE to keep stock to add to my collection. If you buy the 10AE (Do it!!), grab yourself another T2 and throw in your turbo and stuff...

just my opinion.

The only reason to leave it stock would be the possible higher resale value of a decent 10 AE in perfect condition.

If you don't ever plan on getting rid of it, then resale value isn't an issue. Mod the crap out of it!

Just don't cut the car and keep the OEM parts so they can bolt back in.

EZ enough.

Add fuel injection to a 68 mustang - why not

I've debated the same issue, and like you, plan on keeping my 10th for as long as I can forsee. I have replaced several parts with aftermarket, so I'm well down the road in that regard. Fact is, until we get many more years down the road, it's probably not going to be much of an issue.

If I were to sell, someone could chase down a original radiator, plug wires, shocks, and suspension bushings, and exhaust system parts if they like. I do want to enjoy the car though, and with 112k on it, I can't see someone offering me more than I have invested for quite a long time. Now if I were looking for one to preserve 100% stock, I would want much fewer miles 20-40k, but pay more.

Have fun, keep the appearance as original as you can, and don't wreck it-- lest you just increased my cars value another buck!

1500 made. That's it. Who knows how many have been crashed and totalled? Someone was restoring his after a PD fire, he searched for months to get the special bronze tinted windshield that they came with. He got one of the last ones still in the States. Along with the GTUs and the CYM, they are the rarest "special" RX-7s in existence.

They're pretty damed rare.

But I say go for it. If you never intend on getting rid of it, then you need to enjoy it. And what's better than a kick-*** 10th AE?

Nothing is better than a kick *** 10th AE!!!

I had the same dilema. My solution, while spendy, was one stock, one moded out!

As to their value, who the hell knows. I've done quite a bit of research on this subject and I estimate that there are fewer than 300 of these in drivable condition and even fewer in the hands of enthusiasts. The only way we will ever know is if all the 10th AE owners register their cars at the following sites:

http://2ndgenrx7.freeservers.com/10thregistry.html
or
http://www.k2rd.com/reg.html

In any case, I think you should keep the body and interior stock, and keep all of the original stock pieces for the future if you decide to mod it out.

The 10 AE's don't really sell much higher than regular TII's around here. If making the car faster will make you happy then do it. That's what your car is for: To make you happy.

Why not modify it? Well, at least the stuff under the hood.

I'd say with the exception of a couple of guages leave the interior and exterior looking stock, but bolt on all your go-fast goodies. You can always take them off, right?

In other words, I'd modify it, but not so much that I couldn't return it to stock.

Hey, as long as you can return it to normal if you want, go for it!

well, thanks for all the input guys. I was pretty sure I wanted to upgrade the engine area at least, and now I'm sure. I'll be adding the following to my baby in the next few weeks.

Wolf 3D v. 4.0
Garrett 60-1 HiFi
HKS EVC 1 (electronic boost controller)
Trust 40mm wastegate
Greddy FMIC
XS Engineering Type H BOV
3" custom DP
Apexi N1 single catback
All emissions removed
Black Magic electric fan
Greddy boost gauge
300ZX TT wheels with 225/55-15s

That's just about everything other than the modest stereo system, although I've probably forgotten something.

I refer to this light kit:

I like the kit because I can still use the stock front bumper. I'm going to keep everything on the exterior stock except for the lights, spoiler and wheels. I should have enough money for them by November of next year.

Well, www.east-bear.co.jp is the website but I don't know of any distributors. When I have money saved up, I'll figure something out.
