Smile should i get it

ok, im a noob to rx7's i am a diehard honda guy. i know i will get flamed for that but o well.

my buddy has a 87-92 rx7 turboII it is a fairly clean car. but it has red interior. no biggie. but it is overheating bad when riding around the neiborhood. it is pusshing all the coolent out of the overflow line. it doesnt have a fan shroud and i didnt see a fan but i can hear one. isnt there supposed to be one like on the front of the motor. if soo could this be why it is over heating.

ok i know yalls answer will be hell yeah cause this is a rx7 forum but should i get it. how much is it worth in this condition. it also needs a fuel pump. i can get it pretty cheap.

thanks,
derrick

umm the fuel pump is kinda ghetto fabulues wired on a switch it works but you got to flip it on and off like 20 times while starting then it will start and run. but when it starts overheating i cut it off and it takes forever to get it started again. but i think if i wired it in right and maybe got a new fuel pump it would run right. thanks for any recomendations

edit: and if anyone could post good pics of there engine bay area it would be appreciated. soo i can see what all is missing in this thing. i am about to search for pics but i figured i would ask since i am new to this site and stuff

yeah, clean *** engine bay and yes i drove it it was definatly fster than my honda. and it drives and shifts so great. and it is missing quit a few things under the hood. and would the fan and shroud not being there cause it to over heat doin about 35-40 mph. i can get it really really cheap. cant tell the price cause everyone from the states will be in georgia lookin for it

I would say get it depending on the price but there could be a major problem with the overheating.

How long has it been doing it and when was it discovered?

Might have a coolant seal blown which then will end in a rebuild.

The fuel pump switch might be a fuel cut switch to help with flooding as well.

it has been over heating for a little while but suposedly cut off every time it started getting hot. and the switch is for the pump power. and u got to flip it on and of like a lot to get it to start. i guess i can tell the price. 500 cash it does run and i think i could put the fan and shroud on it and a fuel pump and it should be ok. but when it first starts it does have a little white blue smoke but it stops smoking soon after it starts up. i have heard that they are known for a smoke and hard starting. should i get it. i think im going to.

If it doesn't have the fan or shroud then I'm guessing he put in an electric fan. Ask him what he's done/taken off the car so you've got an idea.

And '87 turbo FC, how'd you get that engine bay so damn clean? Details!

ohh and sorry but how hard is it to change the coolent seal. how much does it cost to have a shop change it. i am mechanicaly inclined if it isnt to hard to do i will do it. and the housing that the top radiator hose hooks to is that the thermostat housing. if soo it doesnt have a thermostate in it cause i took it off the other day to see if the thermo was stuck and there wasnt one. would that cause any overheating problems. i would think that would make it run cooler but im new to rx7's. thanks for the help guys.

Yes and Yes. IIRC the thermostate holds open a trap door or somthing that lets the water flow. Lack of thermostate = lack of water flow.

I would get it for $500 no questions about it as long as the rest of it is in good shape.

Coolant seals require you to pull the engine and basically rebuild but from what you discribe it doesn't sound like it needs new seals. Might just need to check the thermostat, waterpump and make sure what type of fan is being used and see if its operational.

ok thanks ppl. i think i will get it. it has a electric fan. but it is like in front of the radiator. like an a/c fan or somethin. the guy im getting it from doesnt know anything about cars or this one. he has only had it for like 2 days he drove it home and hasnt moved it since. but i know the guy that had it before him. so yall think if i put a fan in it a shroud and a thermostat that should fix my overheating. if soo i am getting it. there is a guy on here that is gonna sell me the fan and a fuel pump for 45 shipped to me. cause i also need the fuel pump i believe. ohh and yes the body is in damn near perfect condition few minor dings. and the interior is complete missing a few little trim peices. but it is red which i dont like. but ppl wont see it when they are behind me. hehe thanks for all the help and keep the comments commin

You are in for a lot of trouble with this car...

Most of the time, one SINGLE overheating will fry the coolant seals. You are talking about MULTIPLE overheating..and driving while it is overheating...

Normally when coolant is squirting out of the overflow, you HAVE blown coolant seals.

And, the need for that switch is to de-flood the engine, NOT because of the fuel pump most likely, but rather because the engine has very poor compression.

I can 85% say that this engine NEEDS a rebuild VERY SOON.

Oh and, with the "priming" the fuel system, try leaving the switch "off", crank the engine for about 8 seconds, wait 30 seconds, crank for 8 seconds, about 4 seconds into this second crank, flip the switch to "on", and it should start right up. No need to flip on and off..that should cause a short.

ohh and the flooding is due to low compression? about how much does it cost to get the motor in these things rebuilt. damn u are discourageing the **** outta me. im not AS happy nemore.

i really think the compression is ok cause it pulls like a jet once it hits boost. but it does have pretty shitty lag.

and it has a blow off valve. would that cause it to run shitty. i will post pics tommarow. and yall can tell me if i got a good deal or not

you wont know unless you take a compression test...

http://www.rotaryresurrection.com/

theres a how-to for a compression test there.
