Short Throw Shifter

Looking to get a short throw for my vert before spring. I really dont feel like spending upwards of $200 for a shifter but dont want one that is $16 dollars and will break first time i rip on it. I have seen various ones on ebay and then did some searching on here and some were satisfied others werent. Now i would like to know which shifter you used from ebay and why you did or didnt like it. I also found one that includes a chrome shift ball and claims to have a lifetime warranty

Miata shifters just arent for me either before you suggest them.

I have a C's short throw shifter + I love it. Just spend the extra to get good stuff. Get bushings too so you don't have to deal with sloppy shifter dick either.

Before you spend big bux on a short shifter, read this link regarding short shifter rattles. The rattling seems to be related the the individual car, not the shifter. If your car rattles, you will not like a short shifter.

http://www.mazdatrix.com/shiftrat.htm

I have a 'c's shortshifter in my 90 vert. I love the short precise throw. Snic-snic is the sound and feel it makes. It is very sweet in operation...BUT it buzzes, rattles and generally drives me out of my mind. I tend to drive around one handed holding my shifter so it doesn't rattle. Not cool.

I just redid my clutch. I very nearly installed the original shifter just to stop it from bugging the ever-loving-crap out of me. I still may.

And yes, I have replaced my bushings and boots; yes, my oil level in the shift tower is above the ball; yes my locking spring is good; tranny is just the one out of three that rattles.

Maybe it won't rattle in my TII when I get it back on the road.

oddly enough my stock shifter rattles but thats because of the bushings. Im not worried about the rattle anyways. I can deal with it plus thats why i have amps in my car

I packed the ball and shaft with grease when i installed my short shifter, only a tiniest little rattle at about a 400 rpm spread. Very short and tight. Quality was top notch!!

I did mine the cheap way, as with everything I do....
I just separated the stock 2-piece shifter. Used a screwdriver, dug out the rubber, welded on a bolt to the top, and screwed on an Rx8 shift ****. Only bad thing is that it's a 6speed ****. If only I could find a 5 speed sticker to cover it, I'd be happy.

You just made a "shorter" shifter, not a "short-throw" shifter.
Functionally though, the result may be similar.

yea i got the Mazdatrix short throw on ebay for $100 shipped and it looked almost new. I also think my shifter rattle is partly due to running solid motor mounts.

buying a new shifter over used short shifter offers no advantages.
I kept my eye on the for sale section and when one went up for sale I bought it. Who is to say if its a month old or 6 years old, 2 miles or 200k miles on it?

exactly my point. Its not like its a big deal as long as you use new bushings and gaskets and change the fluid in the shifter case. Most likely no one will ever see it anyways

Yes, but not because I look at the pattern and think 6 speed.

It's because my DD is an Audi A6 with a 6 speed, and it's become second nature to shift into 6th.
