I'm looking for a short shifter too, because my bushings are kinda fuct up. Do the ones for fd's fit in the fc?

Not anything against the company at all (they seem fine), but I wouldn't opt for the mazdaracing.com shifter unless you're really just trying to save money and be stingy. The effort required to operate the shifter after installation (with the bushings they supply) is ridiculous and will cause your shifts to be slower than stock. I was not around when my friend put it in his FC (I was at work so I didn't help him), but he was there when I put mine in (not the mazdaracing.com one...MS all the way but I've used the mazdatrix one too and it's very good). It's not hard at all to install one so I really can't see him messing something up that bad...I REALLY disliked the shifter very much when I drove the car. He might have put the bushings in wrong, but still...just be careful if you buy it. Let me know how it turns out.

I saw an FC this weekend, and noticed his short shifter. I asked him where he got it, and he said all he did was cut the stock shifter way down, then welded an upside-down bolt to the top of the shaft and stock the shifter on that. Seemed to work great. Are there any downsides to something like this?

it's not actually a short-shifter, that's about the only downside

Leaving you with half a shifter.

The stock shifter with good bushings, like 20 bucks from the dealer ( 2 kits for upper and lower), is an exelent performance shifter.

What about excess noise/vibration from the shifter, is that a problem?

right, that's not the same as a true short shifter, or more acurately, a short-throw shifter. a true short shifter (the ones that cost money) are built differently so that the fulcrum of the shift lever is higher on the stick. the result is that you move the top of the stick less distance to make a shift. they also happen to be shorter in length, but that's not what the big deal is = )

disadvantages of a the one you saw? depends on how good a welder he is.

The Mazdatrix unit seems to be the most commonly used. There is however, others available on the market..

THey are around $250-$300 a pop

no/no no problems, only thing close to a problem is the shifter is a little stiff, but its a REAL short shifter, so this is to be expected.

shifters and fulcrums

The only way to make a true short shifter, is to replace the entire shifter housing. If you just change the shifter in the shifter housing without changing the housing, which in turn changes the relationship to the shifters position to the shifter shaft, which the end peice sits, you have just made a shorter shifter, which is harder to shift, because you have taken the leverage out of the shifter(and are still stuck with the same distance on the lower fulcrum where it counts). The stock shifter housing has only about 2 1/2 inches of shifter below the fulcrum in the housing. You cant really get much more than that. At least not any you will be able to really knotice, without making it dreadfully hard to shift. Also the stock shifter is weighted very knicely.

I would recomend pulling it and looking in the housing, before you spend your money. You may find its better than you thaught, and then you could spend your money on thgings that would really inprove your perfromance instead of mod list.

I have the mazdaracing unit. As long as you have some form of muscle on your right hand you get used to shifting with it and its pretty damn fast.

I was thinking of buying the mazdatrix shifter in the next couple of days since my bushings are shot.

Lol, damn strait
Putting it in reverse can be a bitch unless you use both hands, for the mazdatrix unit at least.

I have a C's, damn good unit. Although I should have gotten a S5 one, this way, I can use a more common shift **** like those on FDs...didn't know I could do that at the time.

I got mine from Japan though, so good luck getting one here. If you have a friend in Japan, you can get it and have him/her ship it here. I got mine for like $160.00, didn't pay shipping since my friend hand carried it back for me!

Shifting effort is slightly more, but you can counter that with a heavier ****. Like I said, search for the S5 C's, that should give you more selection on shift *****.

I bought the mazdaspeed shifter from a friend of mine's shop out of a wrecked car. I got a pretty good deal on it so I thought what the hell. I freakin love that thing. I've had more than one person tell me how cool it was to drive my car because the shifter was awesome. Just my 2 cents.

I can only picture your arms as strips of fettuccini dangling helplessly at your sides. (Nice superfluous use of the letter k, it adds credibility.)

The Mazdatrix short shifter is a nice unit. I haven't happened upon any obvious problems.
