short shift kit
i have recently bought an 87 tII. i am wondering if there is a short shifter kit offerend for this car, and if there is any way to differentiate between the stock shifting mechanism and a short throw setup. i want to know because i am not sure what is on the car. any help would be appreciated
I took my shifter and chopped it. Its so sweet now. what you do is take the center plastic, shift ****, and shift boot crap off. Then you take a blow torch and heat up the shifter lever up until it starts to smoke. then grab some thick *** gloves and yank the thing off. theres a huge rubber gromet that will let loose the top half of the shifter.
Clean all the rubber off the bottom half and drill a nice 7/32 inch hole in the bottom half. Cut a piece off the half you just pulled off (like 2 inches) and drill 7/32 inch hol. Then tap both sides with a 1/4x20 tap and get a piece of Grade 8 or grade 10 1/4x20 bolt and put it in both sides.
I did this two moths ago and I can supply a picture or two if you have paypal.

The stock lever has a rubber isolation section in the middle. The short shift levers are a single solid piece.
On both my old 87 and the current 91, I cut the threads with a Dremmel, leaving about 3/8". Then I deepened the hole in a wood shift ball with an 11/32" drill, almost through, so the ball sits down lower. The threads screw into the wood, so it's really secure. A 1" piece of heater hose holds the boot down and hides the **** collar & set screw.
Now I can flick it from 1 to 2 and 3 to 4 without moving my elbow.
I should mention, this works really with synthetic gear oil in the tranny..
