Shifting problems!!!
Shifting problems!!!
I just bought my 86 rx-7 GXL, wich is very clean by the way.
But when I first started the car this morning, I had a lot of difficulties to pass the shifter in reverse position. I had to wait the engine to be hot (but it was still difficult).
It also makes this freaking noise (the one it does when you miss a shift) very often when I shift.
When I did the road test, only the fifth gear had this kind of problems. I thought it was the synchro and a friend-mechanic told me I could probably fix the problem by changing the kind of oil transmission.
The base of the shifter becomes also very hot when I go above 120 km/h.
I only hope I'm not gonna have to change the transmission; the car has only 140k km!!!
If you have any idea of what I could do to fix the problems, I'd be very thankful.

i have the same problem in my car but its only reverse. heres how i take care of the problem when i shift into reverse it gets to a point where the shifter gives resistance and then i let out on the clutch slightly and then it shifts into reverse smoothly. and it also woulbe a good idea to chance your tranny fluid.

yeah i do the let the cluthc out very slighty and it pops into R on mine, does your trany make any bearing noise?? my shifter used to get REALLY hot, a few months before it went out but it had like 180K on it
with the reverse you have to pop it down into a space directly below 5th, its half way between a neutral and full reverse, then go right-down (this is not how I say the real shifter is, but this is how MINE "acts"). Picture details it :
Try shifting into 5 th gear, before going into R. That seems to help me at times, and has since just become a habit.
My inner shifter boots were looking ratty, so I wrapped part of an old bath towel around the shifter, before I put the top boot on. Woks well.
