Shifting Into Second

Okay, either I can't shift right, or the second gear of the FC S4 T2 is hard to shift into and someone needs to guide me. Here's the problem. I know it's most probably me, but when I drive normally, car shift fine, but even then, I very rarely miss-shift second gear. But when I push it, I rarely get second gear right, I always grind the second gear. Now, is this with me or the car? I have a hell of a time getting into second when I want to push it, it grinds almost EVERYTIME. Can anyone help me out?

You will see many (includine me) swear by synthetic gear oil in the tranny.
If your syncros have any life left, synthetic gear will help.

Also - I know 1st gear acceleration is fun, but you need to train yourself to get out of 1st early & nail 2nd around 6K.
The sooner you short shift to 2nd the faster you can make the change.
You will soon appreciate the wide power band of the rotary as 2nd does the grunt pull.

It takes practice, especially if your beside another car & you loose some ground shifting early, but that 2nd gear pull will make it all back & more.

Here's a video of a little on-ramp pull for example:

That was my prior NA.

Some other shift performance factors:
Replace any worn shift bushings, short throw shift lever, light flywheel, and.. practice.

I'd recommend the synthetic gear oil too. I'm personally running Redline and now shifting hard into second is a bit smoother. It didn't make a huge difference, but then again I wasnt really having any serious problems either.

As far as people having trouble with Sureshot's video, it's probably a video codec issue.

I'm a big believer in Redline MT90, but I also have an opinion on technique that I want to share...

I've always thought that the rotary takes a slightly different technique than shifitng a piston engine. The reciprocating mass of the latter causes it to slow faster when you push in the clutch, such that you need to give it a squirt of gas in order to match revs for the next higher gear. When you push in the clutch on the rotary, it just wants to just keep right on spinning, as there's nothing to slow it down except friction forces. So, instead of giving it a squirt of gas, I always hestitate just a moment (like a tenth of a second, or so) to wait for the revs to drop to the matching RPM.

I also always thought a big benefit of a lighter flywheel is that its reduced rotational inertia allows the rotary to slow faster once you push in the clutch, and therefore allows faster, smoother shifting.
