Open it up (easy access from the top) and see if the bushings are shot, which they probably are; you can get a new set from Mazdatrix.

bushings are the main reason for the shifter to be loose, second main reason is the left to center return spring breaks in these trannies all the time. the spring only costs about $10 but for a shop to replace the spring will cost about $400 or so. the shifter bushings are easy enough to replace by yourself and will cure it to a reasonable feeling shifter feel.

How hard would it be to replace that spring yourself.

involves removing the transmission and disassembling the back half of the transmission(sounds much harder than it is).

most people just live with the return spring issue and replace the shifter bushings. even the spring in my car is broken because its more work than its worth to just get a little feel back into the shifter.

True.. Heh.. I plan to drop in a 13BT anyways when the engine or tranny dies. I am just gonna replace the bushings and go with it.

i bet its weird driving your car with that shifter feeling like your mom!
haha, just kidding...

just buy new shifter bushings for it. they are about 30 bucks shipped from ebay, get the top and bottom one for it and put the springs on.

fish out as much of the old bushings as you can!

Call mallory mazda 1-888-533-3400 ask for Ray. He sell any rx7 parts you need, and he give us club member wholesale prices. I just bought bushing upper and lower for under $20.00 shipped. He a great guy to deal with.
