Question Shift Up light no longer functions

My '88 SE 's shift up arrow light thing used to work(even though its truly an idiot light - I use the Tach alarm for a shift light - LOL), but now only comes on when the key is on but the motor is not running, never when driving. NE1 run into this B4? Not a critical problem (I hope) , but one of those nagging things that makes u wonder WTF is next to go out.

Check your 5th/reverse switch on the tranny...You can easily check it from the ECU if you know which pin to backprobe (see FSM, fuel/ecu section for your car).

if it isnt what wayne said. you probably a bad solder point. you have to take your dash off and remove all of the old solder and put new stuff in.

very common in 86-88's and can be blamed for pretty much every electrical problem
does your clock work? how about all of your other interior electrical ****?

As far as I know everything electrical works. Clock, Stereo(crackles), Logicon(Intermittant), Wiper switch in low only(I rigged a switch to the E-brake handle from fuse box), Antenna half way up(or down) & no longer spins its motor, Sunroof with a little lift, Alarm, rear defrost, Low coolant works & low oil alarms, 3k warm up in neutral, clutch/starter lockout switch, O2 sensor wire hanging off the sensor, My fuel level has been reading lower & lower lately?(posted as seprate thread).

I know that doesn't sound like "Everything works" but I hope that clarifies the situation. I'm not getting any beeping sounds or any indication that something is screwed. I figured something is loose somewhere/bad solder joint. I don't beat on the car very much & it's in "relatively" good shape overall I suppose.

wow...i have to check it out. at how low does it have to be to hear it buzz?

the shift "buzzer" doesn't really buzz. the shift light lights up between 3800-6k rpms depending on how much throttle you're giving it. you'd only hear a buzz when u reach more than 7500 rpms.

ok. as for the shift buzzer, i've never heard one buzzing when u need to shift. only for the redline. if i had one that did, i'd take it off cuz imo it would be annoying to hear it buzz when u need to shift - especially when u go from mid rpms to wot on second gear.

Ok There is a shift up light(no buzzer) supposedly for fuel economy. There is a Tach alarm buzzer(no light) that goes of around 6850 RPM. 2 diffrent things. My shift up light doesn't work properly, but I don't miss it at all. Just wondering WTF?

Shift lights are found on S4 manual tranny cars. It indicates when to shift for best mileage.

No such thing as a shift buzzer

Only a redline/over-rev/ low oil/low coolant buzzer.

does the low oil sound like the low coolant buzzer just w/o the 'add coolant' light on or does it sound different? and how low the oil has to be for the buzzer to warn you?

the low oil and the low coolant are the same buzzer. For the low oil to buzz, you're usually looking at close to 2qt low.

thanks man. now i know. only reason i asked cuz when i first brought my car, i had problems with the thermostat and water therm sensor so it'll buzz with the add coolant light on. once fixed i heard the same buzzer w/o the light. for awhile i thought i was going crazy.

The low oil buzzer should be accompanied by an oil light, at least my my S4 anyway.

I too have the same problem with the shift light, but I just don't care.

Low oil alarm buzzer has an indicator light as well.. its at the bottom of the dipstick or so .. oil level wise. Yeah I guess I'm just bored & wondering about some silly shift light that we all ignore anyway... just another "7" moment I guess... something broke that doesn't matter!?! I'll accept that... not a problem LOL. Now if only my 5th & 6th ports would magically start working..... hmmmm

Wire them open? I wish I could. The actuators seem to be trying to move the sleeves, but it appears the sleeves are stuck. I tried to move them with pliers & some penetrating lube. I got the rear one to move a little bit & not much movement at all on the forward one.

Survey says I gotta pull the manifolds off to fix them. U got a better idea? I have to drive the car so I don't want to start ripping it apart. The car runs good, idles great & starts almost everytime(floods once every few months). I'm sure once I get started taking stuff off that I'm gonna break something in the process.

I was gonna wait till I have a another vehicle to drive & then pull the manifolds & port them, do the throttle body mod & the rat's nest removal & maybe some PineApple Sleeves for 5th & 6th. I already did a RB RoadRace Exhaust(full system), K&N intake kit, removed air pump & ACV. I'm also gonna have to replace the fuel sender & pump(fuel gauge keeps reading lower & lower - see other post) & also replace the alternator with a SilverRotor Special(due to mysterious one time temporary failure one night). I suppose I can also remove my wiper switch & have it rebuilt as well.

So I guess the only problem I haven't found a solution for is the silly shift-up light - it's probably just a connection on the tranny - unless my dangling O2 sensor wire has befuddled the ECU. I think I'm pretty lucky with my 7 compared to alot of other people around here.
