shaftplay @ s4 turbo

Hi guys...

im currently swapping a used engine into my car...

S4 turbo 1987...
i'm wondering how much shaftplay is normal!? i can push on both turbos the shaft left/right and pull him in/out...
so how much is normal and whats the best way to meassure it?

I've always heard a small amount of side-to-side play is acceptable but there shouldn't be ANY in/out shaft movement...

i'm really not sure if i can push the shaft in and out, but i can definitly push the sheft left/right...

small amount of left-right is fine because these arent ball bearing turbo's, there needs to be a small space for the oil to flow through while the car is running...or thats what i have gathered from what ive heard over the years

oh, clear... fluid bearing =) kk, so sideplay is ok...
but whats with the axial play?

in and out play indicated worn bearing/seals, i took apart one turbo like that ..
