Setting my car up for autox... questions

I am getting ready to put my 1989 Rx-7 back together... and I really want to autocross with it... I was at RIT on sunday and they were tearing up the parking lot.... I am hooked and can't wait to get my car done and to get involved. While I was up there I ran into a guy who was autocrossing his 87(I believe...) Rx7 NA (I'm pretty sure he is a forum member) and I asked him some questions. Now I have a whole bunch more after reading the rule book... So here goes....

I am trying to remain in the Stock class since I dont have the funds to compete is street prepaired... So I know I can't street port... What other engine mods/parts should I avoid, that I might encounter in my rebuild, that would take me out of the stock class?

No cone filter right? I have to keep the stock box but can I put a high flow filter in there?

I want to premix on my rebuild... but do I have to keep the OMP on and functioning to be in the stock class? Will it effect the motor/run characteristics if I put the OMP back on and premix?

Since I have an NA can I use my turbo 2 hood or Will I have to have the NA hood back on it to be in the stock class? Will anyone care that I have S4 bodyparts(bumper, fenders) on my S5?

Can I use the 16in T2 wheels in my NA since they came stock on some Rx-7s or do I have to stick with 15s because I have an NA? Same with the LSD... can I put one on my car or do I need to stick with the open diff because thats what the GTU came with? Also the single to 4 piston caliper and brake conversion... Can I swap those in without taking my self out of the stock class? I'm comfused about the rules about swapping stock parts from the same make & model, different trim level...

I can use an aftermarket cat back too right?

Thanks for the help if you can answer these questions... It may not be a huge deal since I'll just be competing at a local level... but I dont really want to end up cheating/ getting moved out of stock class the first time I hit the auto x circuit.

Thanks for reading,
-Rob

You can use a cone filter (legal in street)
You can use the TII hood
Can use an n/a LSD diff
Can run premix
Most places will allow a -1/+1 in rim sizes, so check your local rules
Yes you can use most aftermarket catbacks.
The various bodyparts won't matter
Yes you can swap the brakes to 4piston
I also suggest some adjustable struts and springs (no lower than 1 inch from stock!)
Also, tires are EVERYTHING! Get some nice sticky low price tires for race days (I'm a Falken Azenis fan, love them!)

And most important, PRACTICE and race OFTEN! That's the #1 thing you can do to lower your times!

You can swap items tha arew of the same spec as a similar model (i.e. - you can put as S5 intake on an S4 or swap the whole motor intact, use tii wheels or any wheel of the same size and maybe offset). It's spelled out in the rulebook. Springs don't have to be OEM, but they must be same springrates and such. You can use any after market struts. You must run full emissions, so you might even have to keep the stock lube system including MOP, but you should refer to the manual. It is cheep.

I run CSP, so some of the things I run are way different than what you guys running C-Stock should do. Just make sure your suspensin in in good working order, replace worn shock, springs, bushings, make sure the engine in in tune and practice.

I just found this page that might prove me wrong...It says that options may be substituted within a model year. Also states aftermarket clutches may be used assuming they are identical.

Yeah I downloaded that rule book, read it this afternoon, and it left me with more questions than answers... It did answer some questions that I had... but some parts were worded strangely(or at least thats how I felt) I think I'll just have to call/email the people from my region(Mohawk-Hudson) and see what they say...

It's best to check with your local rules, as they will vary from official. I was the tech guy at many solo events and a lot of common things like this we allowed in street class.

stock clutch will work fine for auto-x since you generealy dont launch or shift as hard as in a drag race. however, a light flywheel would be a good idea if you can swing it.

Most of the suggestions you guys mentioned aren't legal for cars in stock classes. Not to mention Rob wants to stay in a stock class due to his funds.

Rob - I'd suggest asking lots of questions at the next autocross and see if those guys run using the basic SCCA Solo rules. If they do the following is a basic list of mods allowed in a stock class:

-Any filter in the stock location(K&N are a pretty good choice)
-Any strut that is a factory type replacement. KYB AGX's or Tokico Ilumina or the non adjustable Tokico's.
-Any front sway bar.
-R compound tires on a set of stock rims or rims of the same size. Since your on a budget a set of used stock rims will suffice. I'm not sure but the BBS rims off a vert might be legal in stock.
-Synthetic fluid for the trans and diff are nice but not necessary.
-Any cat back exhaust that meets sound(if they check).

But the main thing is make sure your car is running properly and get as much seat time as you can even if you don't do anything to your car. Seat time, seat time, seat time, etc.......................

You get the idea. Just make your car reliable and have fun.

You are even even allowed a front strut tower brace as well but not a rear one - Cork Sport sells a decent one for like $40.
I ran in E Stock last year (CSP this year) and really the tires make the biggest difference. If your car is running well you have more than enough power to be competitive in ES.
Autocross is probably the best way to learn the limits of your car and yourself.

Thumbs up

you must have been talking to Paul Hawkins, he's cool and he's got a wicked fast NA FC. his son Scott and I along with another guy Jason will be racing but the three of us will be in Emod from the LS1 V8 swaps, anyhow, be sure to come talk to us too, the FC chassis is amazing on course, even on a budget. Jason had the red FC with the LS1 swap, nice times for 245 wide street tires! anyhow, you should get a rulebook, theyre only $15 or $20 and it will prevent you from making a mistake in modding the car or removing something and ending up in a faster class than youre ready to be in. be very wary of what people tel you over the internet about what is and what is not allowed, you could get hosed easily... just buy a rulebook or borrow one... are you in the local yahoogroup---> flrsolo ?
you really should leave the car completely stock and run it on some nice sticky street tires to get the feel for it and become a great driver first... but I know its hard to NOT mod a car. is your car running or is it almost running? hope to see ya at the next event! I'll be there!

Paul Hawkins have the silver FC? I saw the red one with the V8 swap run... that was sick... I can't believe people are against V8 swaps. I'm actually in the Mohawk-Hudson region, but my friend is going to RIT so I might come out there and race in the finger lakes region. I got lucky that the car I have has no mods on it... will be no problem to keep it stock. I will definely have to check on the clutch rules before I put a new one on. My car is currently not running, I'm working on the engine rebuild, waiting for my parts to come... after that I'm going to have to drive a bunch to break it in then I can race it... should be and exciting first time for me... I had always wanted to do autocross but after seeing it up close and personal I got hooked, I'm also joining the SCCA because of this too... Thanks
