Second Gen Glass Moonroofs

Hello to all,

Let me first say I've searched previous postings, but did not find a complete or definitive answer regarding this subject - ergo this post. (Maybe this thread can end up being the reference on the subject?)

One of my cars is a second gen '87 GXL that has a rusted sunroof. Instead of searching for a replacement metal part (that may not be much better), I am considering an OEM size glass substitution.

I understand these glass units were all after-market items. The question(s) are;

* Who were the manufacturers of these units?
* Was one product better than another?
* Is there any problem in installing them?
* What special issues should be paid attention to in the use of such?
* Any other information someone would want to add.

Regards to all,
Ronald Ferguson

There's like three different versions that I know of...
One version has a "through bolt" design, there you see the 4 metal "caps" on top.
I think this is most common.
I have two of these, and one is tinted glass (not tint film), and the other has a black matrix design on it.
The other version is (bronze tinted) and all glass top - you don't see the fasteners from outside / top.
This is the "Finishline" Version?
More rare and usually commands a premium.

Check out the For Sale section and eBay.
They do come up for sale pretty regularly, but I haven't seen one in a while - past several months.

These things do command serious money. Minimum I'd say at least $150, and I've seen one go for $500+ on eBay!

Keep in mind you can pick up non-rusted replacement panels for cheap. It shouldn't cost much to get it paint matched.

My GXL has a glass one (non thru-bolt) and it sucks.
Whatever company made it didn't make it precisely straight and it split one day in the hot sun.

I've got a metal one that's going on as soon as i get a new rubber seal for it.

The glass one blows anyways because you fry your *** in the hot sun.

I just last week purchased a 86 GXL. The tinted 'moon roof' was made by Saratoga Sun Roof Corp. out of NY. The lady I bought it from had the original sunroof in the box. I have them both. No knowledge of the company.

+1000

Ultra gayness in the hot sun. Had that in my last RX, and never again. Save money go with the steel one. If you really want to be different than everyone else CF would be the way to go. Oven is not fun

Got a glass one for sell if anyone wants to buy it. both my roommates and my rx-7's roofs don't open, well mine tilts and thats it. kinda blows. if intrested make and offer or if you need more details. it has a good seal just needs to be put back on with windshild sealer and needs one of the faseners, but you can make one or find one. make an offer that's reasonable and we'll let it go + shipping...
