hard starting cold
hard starting cold
when i start my car after its cooled down or frist thing in the morning it has a hard time staying on rpm drops and it just dies out
unless i hold the gas pedal till it warms up once warmed up it will idle fine and stay running and on cold starts i get a cloud of white smoke coming out i searched around hardly found anything helpful also the oil pressure gauge doesnt work but im sure its cyrculating oil. maybe someone can lead me in the right direction thanks im new to the rotary and am learning i apperciate your help.

IF I'm not mistaken, the white smoke is common with most RX-7s, though I don't know what causes it. If you have the cold start taken off your car, it will be hard to keep it running. I'm not the smartest tool in the shed for these items, but whatever the cold start unit is, when you first start your car, it will rev it up to 2-3k and hold it there until it warms up, then will drop back down to regular RPMs.
Smell the smoke sometime. If it has a sweet smell, then it's not oil, it's coolant and the engine needs to be rebuilt.
If the engine starts but won't hold an idle by itself and depends on your foot to keep it running, then it's possible the water thermowax/fast idle cam/screw are mal adjusted. See your local FSM for adjusting it.
If it is just plain difficult to start, as in taking a lot of cranking to start, BUT once warmed up starts each and every time, then my favorite is to think the waterthermo sensor is disconnected. It's on the BACK of the water pump housing. See the local FSM for location.
If the water thermo sensor is disconnected, what happens is the ECU defaults to 176* F for a coolant temp, and that results in the amount of fuel injected during the STARTING PROCEDURE, to be very little vs what it should be. Lower temp....more fuel. Higher temp....less fuel during STARTING. Starting being just that. The initial start. After 500rpm has been reached, then the ECU uses the AFM for fuel delivery.
That is writtem in the Training Manual the the NZ provided us with a year ago.
Sounds to me like the engine needs to be rebuilt.
I was having a similar problem with my CRX....I'd fire it up and it would die right away unless I fed it some gas for a minute, and the hotter it got and the longer it ran more white smoke would emit from the tailpipe. Turns out the block was cracked AND I blew a head gasket.
Anyway I hope you find out what's wrong soon...

I have the same problme, its due to dirty fuel injectors i've been told. you have to get them pulled and cleaned. it just floods out the engine, but not bad enought to not start. oh if it dose that just pump the gas once while crankin it don't hold it or it will flood out compleatly. it's happens to older rx motors.
