seatbelt recall

For the past few weeks my seat belt has been stuck about an inch before the 90 degree angle in the guide. i did not worry about it until today when i opened the door and it moved forward pulling out a greasy piece of rubber. Everytime I open or close the door it pulls this rubber further out. I called the local mazda dealership, they told me that it had been repaired in 97 and that if i wanted it done I would have to pay. I have two questions; 1, since it is a recall to they legally have to fix it free or charge, and 2, if they don't have too is it something i can do myself?

Are you certain there's a recall for this on your car? I looked at www.nhtsa.org and there doesn't seem to be a seatbelt recall for a 1994 model. I believe that was only for the 89-91 models. If I missed it and there is an active recall in place for your car, then, yes, it is for the lifetime of the vehicle. It's safety related and they want to avoid potential lawsuits stemming from known safety issues, regardless of time. Some dealers will try to get out of the fix because they have to shoulder the costs of parts and labor until corporate repays thems, but you can call Mazda to get the ball rolling.

NHTSA told me that it is up to the maker, Mazda told me that no matter what it is coverd. I called the dealership back and they told me they would look at the car on Thursday to determine if the problem actually is the recall or not. I called another dealership a town over and they will fix it tomorrow morning. Someone lost all of my business.

I believe that mazda had a full lifetime recall on the seatbelts, your dealer should have to replace them no charge

There was actually a post on here before...

If the Mazda dealership won't fix it, or tries to charge you for it; get the dealerships name, address, and the name of whoever told you they wouldn't do it, and send it to an e-mail address (it was in the post before). If I remember correctly, the address you send it to is a higher-up in Mazda-USA

The damned dealership tried to skrew me over.. they told me time and time again they wouldent fix it.. so i was obviesly pissed when they found out they had to do it for free. If you call the 1800 numer thats in one of the other seatbelt posts than they will sort it all out. I talked to a guy there.. he called the dealership for me and 10 minutes later i had a call from the same dealership asking "if i wanted to come in today" they still didnt like doing the job, and dont let them **** with your car, i have strait pipes and i was sitting in the waiting area and hurt my car rev up to like 6 grand and i snapped.... it doesnt take 1.5 miles to move my car 200 feet to fix the ******* seatbelt... I dont think iv ever seen a grown man be so scared for his life... i apoligize but i hate dealeships. in the long run.. just call the number and they willl set it up for you.

Next time a dealer refuses to fix a seat belt.....go hit a tree and now you own the dealership and a small part of Mazda/ford.

Well that is an exaggeration but you get the idea. Too bad you have to have your arm re-attached to your forehead b4 you get an award like that.

forget about that man, the same thing happened to me and i got to ebay.com and bought not one but the 2 sides seatbelts for 20$$ man. thats a super reasonable price considering that a guy here where i live want it to sell me just one seatbelt side for 250$$. and i do it all by myself, the seatbelt change its not to easy but it was worth it(save a lot of money).
try considering the ebay side

Probably not for free as the recall and warrantee were only greanted on automatic seatbelt assemblies including rails, wires, and motor. I'm getting mine done in a week or so and I had to drive a friggin hour each way to the dealer just so they could say "yes, we'll do the work for free." What a friggin rip. Oh well. Atleast they're gonna do the work. Even though the job was done twice, once in 94 and once in 99. LIFETIME means as long as it isn't a small compacted metal cube.

BTW... Did anyone who had the job done get the dealer to replace the a-pillar trim they broke for free too??? I asked about it but the guy was like "we'll have to see how the install goes first and then call mazda and see if they'll allow it." Who knows?
