Scared....

OK my I just bought my 87' T2 and the mufflers were severly fucked up (all full of holes, no tips, barely hanging on). SO I just took them off, well ever since then my car is so loud I can barely hear the turbo spool (big shock I know ) but other than that it didnt change much. Until a little while ago I noticed what I think might be detonation. When the car is running (Doesnt matter what its at RPM wise) you can hear a second noise besides the engine its hard to explain but I am terrified because I know detonation is bad but even worse in a rotary. So I was just wondering if anyone could shine a little light on this situation.

Backfiring. No worries. Just keep an eye on your boost gauge, cuz you might get a little creep.

You have no idea how much better I fell now! Thx much, oh one last question I have enough cash for the 16425 exhuast kit from mazdatrix and the suitabke header from them, but I dont have enough for the presilencer also. So my question is can I run headers and a single cat exhaust without a presilencer or willI have problems with the actuators?

Wire them open, I did! Also, watch for boost creep. It can kill your engine if you have a free flowing exhaust. Also, check out www.rx7.com for some really great exhaust prices as well as good ol www.rx7store.net! Good luck!

I dont suppose you would like to get into more detail on how to wire the actuators open would you ? Check out the www.mazdatrix.com exhaust 16425 it is in the racing section, freaking incredible numbers if they are even remotely true I think all TII's need it Thanks again for the help

Hmmmm. I have a n/a though, but most exhausts will work on both. Ok, do a search for the 5th and 6th ports. That is the best help I can give you. Once you do that, run a racepipe, ie no cats, and get a good turbo timer, and you can start removing all that heavy emissions ****. However, do not do ANY of this if they test for emissions in your state, as you will have to replace ALL of it every year!

heheh see what I mean those are some ******* incredible numbers, WI is weird on emissions in the city you have to pass emissions eveery two years and outside city limits you never have to pass emissions so if i did racepipes I could just register it outside of city limits. See there are perks to living in a shitty state Oh yeah only problem with that exhaust setup is that it is $700 and change but its well worth it!

What is this forum coming to? You cannot put a header on a T2, and T2s do not have auxillary (5th and 6th) ports. There is nothing to wire open. You need a downpipe, presilencer or cat, and a catback. If you do this, you will need to either port your wastegate so you don't overboost, or get an FCD and upgrade your fuel system. People should not buy T2s without understanding how they work first. You cannot just jump in and start modifying things without knowing what you are doing. It is very possible that you are hearing detonation, because if you removed your holy exhaust, you are more than likely overboosting, running lean, and detonating.

According to my trusty Hayne's manual, the TII DOES have 5th and 6th ports! Hmmmmmmm

It sounds to me like its coming from under the hood, thats why I think its detonation.

Ah, if it is from the engine, it is VERY possible to be detonation. Better get some mufflers NOW!!!!

The sound is a very deep almost popping sound and it comes at steady constant intervals

Hmmm, well if it is constant, I am pretty sure sure yau can rule out backfiring, and if it is deep, rule out detonation as well. I am baffeled! But I am also a proven idiot!

Does it sound at all like popcorn popping?

Haynes' manuals have quite a few mistakes in them. I can guarantee you that none of the 13BTs had auxillary ports.

Hmmmm. And I thought that Hayne's was reliable. Damn it! Oh well, this is a very informative post! I'm glad I'm turbo free, though....
