S5 turbo w/internal wastegate, vented open atmosphere!!

ok i just a turbo from a friend in arkansaw. he doenst know anything about rx7s. so i get this turbo to day, and it isnt like a normal turbo. someone modified the back plate , by ptting a 2" hole in it where the waste gate is. than divided the turbine by machining the thurbine housing bigger and inserting a pipe insode so it is smooth than welding it to the back plare.. wierdest thing i have ever seen. my question is what is the benifit to doing this. and is it worth puttin on my car..

from what it sounds like, someone modified the stock turbo to act more like it has an external wastegate. It gives better exhaust flow because the turbulance of the wastegate air comes in (ideally) further down stream.

There are some of those floating around. IT's not hard to do, really, and I think there used to be a kit available from japan or something.

It keeps the wastegate dumped air from having to re-enter the exhaust pathway at a right angle to the flow of the main exhaust...slightly increasing flow potential, if you are otherwise maxed out (open exhaust, etc.). It really isn't a big deal one way or another, though.

For instance, if you have a high power setup with an external aftermarket wastegate, you can plumb it back into the main exhaust for less noise. We're told it's best to do this as far away from the turbo as reasonably possible, and at as small an angle to the main flow direction, to keep from interrupting the main flow. The stock wastegate puts it's dumped exhaust back into the main flow at a 90* angle, and it does so too soon.

I've even seen people rig aftermarket wastegates onto stock turbos by just boring out the turbine housing and running a pipe out of it for the aftermarket gate to bolt onto. I also recently saw an s4 car with an aftermarket wastegate plumbed into the manifold prior to the turbo, and the stock wastegate just left shut and the actuator unhooked from boost.

ive seen it on a s5, was a guy i knew and it was a part from japan.
was a new backingplate that divided the main turbine exhaust from the wastegate to a 3" opening to bolt up to, and then had a tube running external for the internal wastegate

was a cool piece. for mine i just welded teh wastegate flapper shut and put a tial 38mm on the stock s4 turbo manifold itself.
Had elliot and turblown do it for me

ok from what i know the guy used to be in japan and shipped a bunch of turbo parts home. he than converted his n/a to turbo over here with the parts he sent. than started upgrading it. the turbo is a S5. i know what the difference is. i have blown up enough turbos and can tell the difference. and i was just a modified back plate that had a hole in it. i just thought it was wierd and wondered if there would be any gain to put it on my car. i have JIC spec 90 exhaust though.
