S5 Turbo modification suggestions

First of all I have searched and have been unable to find answers to my specific situation.

I have recently finished a TII swap into my 89 convertible. The engine has been rebuilt with street port on intake exhaust. Running a stock S5 turbo, waste gate has NOT been ported. Emissions removed, block off plates in place. 3"RB downpipe, 3"magnaflow presilencer and I used my old HKS 50mm exhaust that was on the NA engine for now. Wanting to upgrade to a larger diameter exhaust but still looking for the one I like. Also has a RP cone filter with stock TID. I had the 550cc injectors cleaned etc. Walbro 255 fuel pump and new fuel filter. Has the corksport charge pipe upgrade running from the turbo to the stock intercooler.

I have put 1500 easy miles on it breaking it in, nothing above 4K rpm and 5 pounds of boost. I changed the oil and filter yesterday and ran it harder up to 6500 rpm in third and the aftermarket boost gauge read 11psi. I quickly let off. The engine runs great and pulls very strong.

Here are my concerns. Obviously hitting fuel cut is a real possibility.
I was wanting to have the cpu sent to Digital tuning to have the RTEK installed and at the same time upgrade to 720cc secondaries. Either that or just get an FCD and make no other changes at this time.

I was told that 720 may not be necessary at this time but not to get the RTEK. To go with the Power FC eventhough it is a lot more money.

I need any opinions or suggestions.

Thanks,
David

My question is should I go with the RTEK and not change the seconadry injectors to 720s?
Should I go with the RTEK and change to 720s?
Should I go with the Power FC or is this overkill while still running the stock turbo?
Do I need at this time to port my waste gate?

With the current mods what other supporting mods do I need to make the engine safe from detonation?

go with the rtek 2.1 its a solid upgrade for a great price and has lots of options and you can keep the stock injectors if you want for now but when you increase power you will need to up the injectors

the first thing you do is port the wastegate so you don't blow your **** up when it gets cold outside

Okay, I will be getting out the die grinder soon. As for the RTEK 2.1. I looked on their website and they do not make an RTEK 2.1 for the S5 turbo.

Can I run an FCD instead until I can send the ECU off? I have a Greddy FCD for a celica all-trac turbo that i am trying to get the schematics to wire to my boost sensor.

Until you get more fuel, (ie larger injectors and a way to tune) the fuel cut is your friend. Fuel cut will save you from lean condition, detonation and blowing your **** up. I would NOT use a FCD it until your fuel system is upgraded and the turbo is ported. A FCD will allow you to blow up your engine before you upgrade the fueling...

Fuel cut is not detonation. It is a harsh, but relatively safe way to protect your engine from overboost. You really should have hit fuel cut at around 9psi or so...

Do you have a wideband? You will need one to get accurate information to tune your afr.

Rtek is not tunable for S5 turbo, there is no 2.0 available yet. You can get v1.8 which will allow your 720's to work well. Then you need something like SAFCII to tune with. The v1.8 can remove the fuel cut as well, so you don't really need a separate FCD.

So to summarize:
1.)Port your wastegate.
2.)Up the fuel (larger injectors, rtek) and
3.) tune (wb +SAFCII) to a safe afr.

Good Luck, sounds like your car is a blast to drive.

Thank you very much jackhild59. That is exactly the answer I was looking for. And yes, going turbo makes the convertible a completely different and more fun car to drive. I highly recommend the conversion.

I realize I did not answer all your questions. No, I do not have a wideband only a narrow band. I thought I had a wideband purchased from one of the members here on RX7club but they sold it to someone else. Still looking for a wideband.

BTW I love your quote "RX7 Convertible-The Anti-Prius"

^lol. I would definitely get a wideband without thinking twice, lets you know when to stop, and hey, its much cheaper than a rebuild.

Imo if your planning on keeping the car for a while and potentially building it to be more powerful in the future, go to a full stand alone now.
