Ok. Thanks for the reply. The funny thing is this car has not been in an accident while I have owned it. I know for a fact this warning has only appeared in the least month. Perhaps I stopped real hard.

Thanks again everyone.

Any idea where I can get one (aside from the dealer) and how much money I can expect to pay?

Ok so here's a pickle for you; i took my car in to get the seatbelt recall done and they performed the service at no charge. But then the service manager called me two days later to tell me that I had to bring the car back so they could put the old (non-working) equipment back in the car due to the fact that my car has a branded title (not a salvage title). And that if I didnt bring it back he would have to charge me $1300 for the parts and labor. Needless to say I brought it back and they put my old broken *** seatbelts back in.

So I was just curious if I should be calling the corporate office to make a complaint or something to that extent.....? Or if theres any way I can get the bastards to put some new belts in without me having to pay anything.

Here's info about it and a reprint of the recall. From Rotary Resurrection's website:

It would not be covered by the recall.

AND just so everyone is clear:

The recall is exclusive to the 89-91 USA spec coupe with the motorized belts.

It did not cover anything else other than that.

So to make it more clear, if you have a convertible the recall does not cover your car. If you have a coupe, but it does not have motorized belts (AKA mouse belts and automatic belts) the recall will not apply to it. If you have a 86-88 model, the recall does not apply to that.

Man that's messed up. Mine is an 88. Oh well, I guess Im gonna die, cuz I aint paying 1300 bucks.

There were no 88 models with mouse belts.

Never heard of a branded title, so not sure what you mean.

They simply were trying to rip you off. Yes you should have called Mazda.

and what makes you think they would have charged you after the fact??? They couldn't charge you for the work if both you and they signed the service invoice agreeing that the work was done.

There is no obligation for them to replace 20+ year old plastics wether they break them or not. I confirmed this with Mazda. So, when I took mine in, I removed the plastic very carefully, so as not to break it.

Haha, funny thing. they made me bring the car back in, to take out the belts, and in the process they broke my a-pillar trim. While they wouldnt honor the recall, they did order me a new a-pillar trim for free... but either way, I'll be giving mazda corporate a call to see what they say about my situation.

I don't think they work that way, IIRC they lock under hard accel/decel forces, not from yanking.

^ Gene's right. A lot of seatbelt mechanisms use a weight to lock the belt when it shifts.

BTW, I don't know why some dealerships are being asses. I've always read the company pays the dealer for the service time and parts, so the dealer isn't loosing anything, no?

What if the passenger seat belt has been cut out? The car was at a shop when i bought it and left it there while the haltech is being shipped from australia (messed up, replaced under warranty), and they fab up a nice exhaust, so i didn't get a good chance to inspect the interior. The driver side belt was intact, but did not do anything when the door was opened. The pasenger belt was not hooked up and there was just a metal stub sticking out of the rail it's subbosed to move on and made a noise like it was trying to move, but didn't. I didn't check if the belt was retracted or simply missing. I didn't bother to check because i just figured i'd put in a harness anyway.

But now that i heard about the recall i wonder if mazda would honor it if the actual belt was missing.

I just went in today to the mazda dealership i work at and told them about it, and the guy is pretty right minded, and he told me they'd have the parts monday to fix it and everything.
i just hope they don't try to pull a fast one on me.
