Just wanted to let you all know... The Mazda shops are still doing the seatbelt track recall on the S5 cars. My S5 TII's drivers side seatbelt didnt work at all, and the passenger one barely worked. I called the closest Mazda dealership and they said that the recall had already been performed on my vehicle, and it would cost $1300 in parts to fix it again. I simply stated that the seatbelt recall had been extended for the life of the vehicle. The parts person said he had to call Mazda Corp. to confirm and he would call me back... Well, He called back and said "lets make you an appointment!" So, I went in last week and had both of my seatbelt tracks/motors replaced 100% for free!

I did alot of reading around this forum about this (thanks to Rx7club, I knew this was a recalled problem) , and alot of people had problems getting the recall work performed, or had to pay for part of the bill. My experience was hassle free! If there is anyone in Kansas that needs this work done, I recommend

Good to hear about the recall!...I have a '90 GXL with both sides not working....cables hanging out of the tracks....I had read elsewhere that if you were getting hassled by the dealer that there was a corporate number to call to get it resolved, as it is indeed an extended lifetime recall. Glad they took care of it, hope I have good luck on mine.

 

I had my drivers side fixed about 18 months ago at Noller Mazda in Topeka. I would guess that they are the same people. Laird Noller owns the Ford dealership in Topeka. They had done both belts in '96. Told me when they broke to bring it back.

 

ive heard nothing to prove its not going still, you cant stop a safty recall.

 

Do some research snowball, alot of dealerships would not honor the recall for people. Especially when the recall had already been performed, and it needed it again. Luckily, I didnt have any problems.

YBNORML I was thinking of coming to Topeka to get mine done. Im from Salina, and decided on Hutch, because it was closer. Glad to hear you got your fixed with no hassle too!

 

I had mine fixed at Clear Lake Mazda in Webster, TX about 8 months ago.....my passenger side has already broke again. Will they fix it twice?

 

Yup, they are suppose to fix it every time it breaks.

 

1. Take it in.
2. Hope they say they don't do it anymore.
3. Go get in a wreck.
4. Hurt yourself (not badly).
5. Sue.
6. Get rich.

It is a life time recall... life of the car in the USA.

If the dealer is refusing to fix it under the recall, you can contact Mazda USA customer service and they will force the dealer to fix it.

There is no ambiguity about it at all. Mazda must fix it or remove the cars from US roads.

It is not Mazda refusing to do it. It is the lame occasional dealer that is trying to get out of doing it. And frankly if the dealer is refusing (or coming up with excuses) then you don't want to do business with that dealer anyway, and just report them to Mazda.

I had to call Mazda North America because a local dealership refused to repair mine stating, "The recall has already been performed"

Within 24 hours the dealership called and apologized and sceduled the repairs the next day.

 

How long did it take for you guys to get your cars back because I'm moving wednesday and I want to get mine fixed before i leave.

 

Icemark beat me too it. I think there is a number to call and everything on fc3spro.com, but the site isn't working at the moment.

 

I took my car to have it done and they did it no problem, although they broke the plastic trim piece around the belts, pissed me off. Then I took another one in to have them fixed and they told me they couldnt do it since it was already done before, then the guy came back and said it could be done since i didnt own the car at the time. That was after they called mazda about the recall because apparently I was lying. Although I had it done at the same dealership with my GXL. After they said they would do it they had to order the parts, which took time cuz they couldnt find the part number. After that they said they'd call me for an appointment, I never got a call and I forgot about it. Tomorrow Im going in there and making an appointment.

 

I took my car in a few years ago (Russ dunmire mazda, tacoma, wa) and they refused to do it.. Just being lazy, cheap. bastards. So, while standing at the front desk, I called that 1800-number, im not sure what it was.. but.. I talked to someone at mazda who knew what the deal was. I told him what had happened and who I had talked to, hes says he'll fix it. So, 30 seconds later.. the bastard mazda guy's phone rings "hello, russ dunmire, uhh.. umm.. yes, sir, offcourse sir. yeah, we'll make sure that gets taken car of, sorry bout that sir" Then, the ******* comes up to me and says "Im sorry about that Mr. Irvine, we will take care of your car right now"

Thank you Mazda, skrew you Russ Dunmire!

Anyway.. They have to do it.. as many times as it breaks.

 

Someone find the number for me so I can go in there prepared tomorrow incase they try to be **** again.

I have an S4 and the driver's side seat belt doesn't retract/tighten unless you heavily coerce it. Is this the same thing? Can I get it fixed under the recall?

EDIT: It doesn't seem to lock when you tug it hard either, like most seatbelts. So I don't think it's accident safe.

EDIT #2: (somewhat unrelated) In an accident the new VW beetle releases an explosive charge through a tiny wankel engine, which tightens the seat belt.

 

no, not related. Retractor assembly is dirty.

Many german cars have seat belt retractors powered by an air charge (not explosive)

So I just need to take the retractor assembly apart and clean it?

 

Not to prolong this old thread. However I have a 90 Vert. The seatbelts are the stock 3 point. I have noticed recently a small piece of paper that says in bright red REPLACE BELT! Something about how there is a fold sewed into the belt and that has become undone. Would this be covered by the recall as well?

I think thats a feature used to tell YOU when its unsafe to use that belt so YOU must replace it. I think its used for when you get into an accident you can actually see if the belt was damaged in the accident, so you know to replace it.


And about forcing dealerships to do stuff, I would just find another place that I wouldnt have to force to do the work. When you force people to do something, they often do poor quality work.

 

Ok. Putting the warning on my seatbelt aside, is this recall only applicable for cars that have motorized shoulder restraints?

That should have been replaced when the car was in the accident.

It would not be covered by the recall.

AND just so everyone is clear:

The recall is exclusive to the 89-91 USA spec coupe with the motorized belts.

It did not cover anything else other than that.

So to make it more clear, if you have a convertible the recall does not cover your car. If you have a coupe, but it does not have motorized belts (AKA mouse belts and automatic belts) the recall will not apply to it. If you have a 86-88 model, the recall does not apply to that.
